About Project

Impressed by the Jeremiah frog statue we made, an Animal Crossing fan found us to custom the villager Billy and Limberg via Etsy.

The other custom villager statues on Etsy are FDM printed PLA garage kits, or hand-made clay models. None of them can compare to the full-color 3D printed resin statue, which has vibrant color, smooth surface, and delicate details.

PolyJet full-color printing requires a full-color 3D model. So here is another strength: you can participate a lot in modeling and be sure about what the model will look like. If you custom a clay model, it's hard to make revisions when you see the finished product.

However, the PolyJet 3D print also costs much higher. For example, our Death Stranding BB Pod is also printed with PolyJet full-color resin. When we enlarge the model to 1cm longer, the printing cost will be doubled.

Solution

  • Step 1: First of all we need to build the 3D models of Limberg the mouse and Billy the goat. We can take the official photos of them as a reference, but it would be better if our client can send us some screenshots from different angles. Besides, the villagers in the screenshots are wearing lovely clothes, while they dress ordinary clothes in the official photos.
  • Step 2: The whole modeling process takes about 10 workdays. The 3D modelers firstly create the body and then map with texture. During mapping, we need the client to offer enlarged screenshots to reproduce the details. The first version would be completed in 5 days, and then we will let the client raise some suggestions. Then we adjust the model, until the client accepts the third version.
  • Step 3: As PolyJet full-color printing is very expensive, we advise the client to decide which size she prefers after the 3D model is built. To save the cost, we suggest printing the 1cm high base with SLA Generic Resin and paint with the classical green color. The bases cost less than $15. As the 7cm statues cost less than $240 and the 8cm ones cost $300, the client decides to print 7cm statues.
  • Step 4: The mouse has a long tail so we split it away and add an insert structure to the tail and the butt. Then we arrange the placement and add soluble PolyJet supports with multi-color resin materials that can let you create complex 3D printed parts and models with no restrictions on geometry.
  • Step 5: The prints require simple post-processing like support removal and sanding. The soluble supports can be easily washed away with water and IPA. Then we can assemble the statues with the bases after air-drying.
