About Project
This project features a nylon 3D printed smart hotel name badge housing with a UV printed front face. The client wanted a chest-worn electronic badge for hotel staff, so the part needed to look more polished than a rough engineering prototype while still being delivered very quickly.
Nylon 3D printing was used for the black housing because it could produce the rectangular body, rounded corners, side holes, front slot, and charging-port-like opening without tooling. The printed nylon surface still showed visible roughness and would need more sanding for a refined product finish, but it provided a fast and practical enclosure for the prototype.
The front branding surface was made with UV printing, which gave the badge a much more finished look. The hotel logo text, thin line, small lettering, and light metallic-looking faceplate were clean and readable. For an urgent order, this combination offered the fastest route to a sample that looked close to a real product, even though the housing surface still needed further finishing before final use.
Challenge
The challenge was speed. The client needed a custom smart electronic name badge for hotel staff, and the sample had to look close enough to a usable product under a tight timeline.
The solution needed to combine a functional nylon housing with a clean branded front surface. The nylon body still required further sanding for a smoother finish, but the UV printed faceplate needed to look sharp, professional, and close to final appearance.
Solution
- Step 1: The smart badge structure was reviewed, including the rectangular housing, rounded corners, front faceplate area, side holes, top slot, and charging-port-like opening.
- Step 2: The black housing was produced by nylon 3D printing to avoid tooling and support the urgent delivery schedule.
- Step 3: The printed housing was checked for overall shape, edge condition, port openings, side holes, and assembly-ready geometry.
- Step 4: The nylon surface was reviewed as a fast prototype finish. It still showed roughness, small surface marks, and areas that would need further sanding for a more refined final product.
- Step 5: UV printing was applied to the front faceplate area to reproduce the hotel branding, fine text, thin line, and light metallic-looking background.
- Step 6: The finished sample was inspected for front readability, logo alignment, printing precision, housing contrast, and overall product-like appearance.
- Step 7: The sample provided the client with a fast, near-usable prototype for review, display, and further product development decisions.
