Custom keycaps have become a small but serious playground for independent designers. A single key can carry a tiny world: a creature sealed inside a transparent dome, a statue-like portrait, a soft pink fantasy character, or even a sculptural hand reaching across the surface. These custom artisan keycaps show exactly why keyboard accessories have grown into collectible design pieces rather than simple functional parts.
For this project, PolyJet 3D printing was a very suitable choice because it can combine full-color internal details with partially transparent outer structures. Instead of painting a flat pattern onto the outside, the design could be built into the keycap itself, giving the piece more depth when viewed from different angles. The transparent resin creates a display-window effect, while the colored elements inside add personality, storytelling, and visual surprise. Challenge
The challenge was to produce small keycaps with accurate keyboard geometry, transparent outer effects, embedded full-color details, smooth curved surfaces, and a polished finish suitable for close-up daily viewing.
Solution
- Step 1: The keycap models were checked before production, including the top curvature, side walls, internal decorative elements, transparent areas, stem structure, and keyboard fit requirements.
- Step 2: The models were oriented and supported for PolyJet printing, so the transparent shell areas, internal color details, and small sculptural features could be produced with stable geometry.
- Step 3: The keycaps were printed with PolyJet technology, where full-color and transparent photopolymer materials were jetted and UV-cured layer by layer to form the complete parts.
- Step 4: Support material was removed after printing, and the keycap interiors, edges, stem areas, and detailed decorative surfaces were carefully cleaned.
- Step 5: The transparent surfaces were sanded and polished to improve clarity, while the outer curves and edges were refined for a smoother hand feel.
- Step 6: Clear acrylic oil was applied to the transparent areas to enhance gloss, depth, and visibility of the internal full-color details.
- Step 7: The finished keycaps were inspected for color visibility, transparency, surface smoothness, stem fit, overall proportions, and display effect on a mechanical keyboard.
