A Muslim father ordered this sandstone statue for his sons. Currently, FacFox does not offer 3D modeling services, so the client found a designer to build the model based on the photo of the boys. There are visible layer lines on their faces, which can be smoothed by sanding. The minimum layer thickness of Color Jet printing technology is 0.1mm, so it may look like Lego pixel art.

Solution

• Step 1: To print a colorful sandstone sculpture, colors are added to 3D models ahead of printing with special software by the designer.
• Step 2: The printing process begins with a bed full of sandstone powder. A binding agent is added to the area of the powder that outlines the print, layer by layer, solidifying the powder into a sandstone-like material.
• Step 3: As the binding agent is applied, a color jet, similar to those seen in most laserjet printers, injects color specific to your model.
• Step 4: Similar to the SLS printing process, the powder serve as the supports for the model, so we don’t need to remove the supports. Just take out the print and clear the excess powder.
