About Project
EN: This monumental equestrian statue presents Zhou Yu, a celebrated military commander of China’s late Eastern Han period and a central figure in the Battle of Red Cliffs. Wearing full armor and holding a sword in his right hand, he sits calmly above a horse that appears ready to surge forward. The animal’s raised forelegs, powerful chest, and flowing mane create a strong sense of stored energy.
The composition joins two qualities traditionally associated with Zhou Yu: cultured confidence and commanding authority. For readers unfamiliar with the literary references, “while he talked and laughed, the enemy fleet vanished into smoke and ashes” evokes his composure in victory, while “heroic in bearing and brilliant in spirit” celebrates his presence as a leader. The pose turns both ideas into physical form.
Measuring 2,789 × 1,383 × 3,561 mm, the work was produced as a finished sand-based object using Binder Jetting 3D printing, rather than as a disposable mold for metal casting. Digital production made it possible to reproduce the layered armor, facial features, tack, fabric folds, and muscular anatomy across this complex form. After printing and assembly, a dark metallic-effect surface treatment unified the sections and gave the sculpture the visual weight of cast metal. The exact coating formulation was not documented, so the finish is described by its observed appearance rather than as a specific paint or plating system.

Solution
- Step 1: Review the full-scale 3D model, overall dimensions, center of gravity, raised-leg pose, load paths, base geometry, and installation requirements.
- Step 2: Divide the model into printable sections based on the machine build volume, transport limits, lifting access, structural connections, and visually discreet seam locations.
- Step 3: Print the statue sections directly in sand using Binder Jetting, preserving the armor plates, facial features, horse anatomy, fabric folds, and surface relief without a separate casting stage.
- Step 4: Cure the sections as required, remove them from the powder bed, clear loose sand from recessed details, and apply the specified strengthening or sealing treatment.
- Step 5: Assemble and align the sections around the engineered support system, secure the joints, integrate the base connections, and refine visible seams.
- Step 6: Apply a consistent dark metallic-effect finish and the specified protective surface system across the assembled sculpture.
- Step 7: Inspect the completed work for alignment, stability, surface continuity, and detail quality before transport and final installation.
