About Project

Created for a Shu Uemura and Hello Kitty collaboration, this large character statue became the focal point of a cosmetics window display. The familiar silhouette was reimagined with metallic gold, a vivid red bow, graphic facial markings, a patterned black kimono, and recognizable co-branded artwork.

FacFox used Binder Jetting to produce the sandstone or sand-based composite body as the statue’s underlying structural core. For oversized display sculptures, this approach can create the required volume at a comparatively economical production cost, without dedicated molds or extensive hand carving. The printed core then provides a stable foundation for the premium cosmetic finish specified by the campaign.

However, the print itself represents only part of the total project budget. Most of the value and labor are concentrated in post-processing: strengthening the porous body, filling and leveling the surface, repeated sanding, priming, metallic painting, accurately registering multicolor graphics and logos, and applying the final gloss protection. Commercial IP work demands especially tight control because small surface defects, uneven reflections, or soft graphic edges become obvious at storefront viewing distances.

Shipping must also be planned early. Sandstone composite sculptures are heavy, so reinforced packing, handling, and freight can cost considerably more than for lightweight foam or hollow plastic displays. Sectioning, installation access, crate dimensions, destination, and possible local assembly should therefore be considered during quotation. FacFox helps clients balance print cost, finishing quality, structural needs, and logistics as one display solution. Contact FacFox or upload your 3D files for a quote.

Challenge

A licensed retail character must match approved colors, graphics, facial features, and logos under close viewing and strong store lighting. The porous, granular surface of a Binder Jet sandstone print therefore required extensive preparation before it could support metallic gold paint, crisp multicolor patterns, sharp branding, and a continuous high-gloss clear coat.

Solution

  • Step 1: Review the approved character model, display dimensions, color references, vector graphics, logo files, viewing distance, and store-lighting conditions.
  • Step 2: Divide and orient the model as required, then produce the statue in sandstone or a sand-based composite using Binder Jetting.
  • Step 3: Remove loose powder, infiltrate the printed sections for strength, assemble the required parts, and stabilize all joints.
  • Step 4: Apply filler to pores, seams, and local depressions, then repeat coarse and fine sanding until the large curved surfaces are visually continuous.
  • Step 5: Spray and inspect the primer, correct remaining pinholes or waviness, and apply the metallic-gold base coat only after the substrate is uniform.
  • Step 6: Allow the metallic coating to cure fully, plot the vector artwork into flexible low-tack masking film, position it on the compound curves, and spray each graphic color separately.
  • Step 7: Produce the co-branded foot graphics as UV DTF crystal transfer decals, align and burnish them onto the painted surface, then remove the carrier film cleanly.
  • Step 8: Apply a full high-gloss clear coat, allow complete curing, inspect color and graphic registration from multiple angles, and prepare the statue for window installation.
