Bosch developed 3D printer MVP, based on pellet BIAM extrusion 3D Printer Hardware

The Bosch Group has shown a growing interest for additive manufacturing over the past few years. The company owns Dremel (a pioneer in educational desktop 3D printers), it has made strategic investments in/formed strategic partnerships with companies such as Arris, Anisoprint and BigRep, it acquired 3D printers (from basic Ultimakers to industrial SLM Solutions systems) and its ceramic division, Bosch Advanced Ceramics has made progress in offering technical ceramic 3D printing capabilities. Now Bosch Industrial Additive Manufacturing, aka BIAM, unveiled a product known (for now) as 3D Printer MVP – (Minimum Viable Product), a 3D printer based on a pellet extrusion process that uses widely available granulate materials.

Creality launches Ender-5 S1 printer for $599 3D Printer Hardware

Creality has officially launched the Ender-5 S1, the latest printer in the company’s Ender series of FDM printers. According to Creality, the Ender-5 S1 has been designed not just to be another one of the printers in the series, but “a flagship that integrates and reinvents the essence of this popular series”. The upgraded motion system, which enables an acceleration speed of 2,000mm/s², and a printing speed of up to 250mm/s printing speed, is one of the ways the company is making this happen.

The year of the binder Additive Manufacturing

Metal binder jetting technology, now also known by the acronym MBJ, is, at the same time, the first and the newest opportunity for binder-based metal AM processes. Invented at MIT in 1993, the technology uses an inkjet printhead to apply binder to a bed of metal powder and form green parts which are similar to parts produced by metal injection molding (MIM). These parts then undergo a series of post-process (which differ for each specific technology), including sintering, to deliver final parts.

3D printing drones, AKA Aerial-AM, developed by researchers Aerospace

Imperial College London and Empa researchers have created a fleet of bee-inspired flying 3D printing drones, collectively known as Aerial Additive Manufacturing (Aerial-AM), for building and repairing structures in-flight. The technology could ultimately be used for manufacturing and building in difficult-to-access or dangerous locations, such as tall buildings, or help with post-disaster relief construction, say the researchers, who publish their work titled ‘Aerial Additive Manufacturing with Multiple Autonomous Robots’ in Nature.

Fraunhofer IGD scientists develop new process to avoid stair-step artifacts 3D Printing Processes

Scientists at Fraunhofer IGD – Mostafa Morsy Abdelkader Morsy, Alan Brunton, and Philipp Urban – whose ‘3D Printing Technology’ department is responsible for the creation of Cuttlefish, have devised a purely geometric and algorithmic method for the elimination of stair-step artifacts in multi-material 3D printing. To avoid quantization errors, the surface of the object is modulated with a high-frequency signal. This results in geometrically accurate and color-true surfaces. The research team has set down their findings in a paper titled ‘Shape Dithering for 3D Printing’, which will be published to coincide with SIGGRAPH, the premier conference, and exhibition on computer graphics and interactive techniques – where the research will be presented by the lead author, Mostafa Morsy Abdelkader Morsy.

According to a story first published by TheDrive, “all models referencing the word Honda posted prior to March 30, 2022, were seemingly removed from Printables without warning. These included speaker brackets, key housings, hood latches, shifter bushings, washer fluid caps, roof latch handles, and my trunk lid handle—a part not offered on 10th generation Accords sold in the U.S. at all. According to the author of the article, many of the removed parts had no Honda branding but were just compatible with Honda vehicles. As it turns out, Prusa says it was issued a takedown notice from Honda and removed all 3D models that referenced the brand.

Visiting Sinterit, the leader in compact SLS 3D printers, is always fun. Cracow, where the company is based, is a beautiful city and even the recent global tensions can ruin the welcoming atmosphere. It had been two years since we last visited to test and review their Lisa Pro machine. Then COVID came, just as the company began moving into the new, much larger facility. In the meantime, Formlabs, the market leader in the affordable SLA segment and Sinterit’s most credible competitor in the compact SLS segment, launched its machine after almost four years of announcements. The Polish company, founded by ex-Google developers and led by CEO Maxime Polesello could have been overwhelmed. Instead, the entire management team decided to focus on new product development and training for its employees. The result is that now, two years later, Sinterit is settled in a large new facility, with a highly organized assembly line, one ambitious product, Lisa X, hitting the market and one more, perhaps even more ambitious, NILS, getting ready to do so soon. When the opportunity came to do another test, this time with the Lisa X, I jumped and I was not disappointed.

However net loss from operations also grew during the Markforged FY 2021, to $61.0 million (compared to a net loss from operations of $17.7 million in the year prior). Quarterly (Q4) revenues also grew. The result is even more significant as the company generated almost as much revenue as its competitor Dekstop Metal did after acquiring two large AM companies (and several smaller ones).

Collins Aerospace has acquired an NXG Xll 600 for its facility in West Des Moines, Iowa from SLM Solutions. Velo3D ships first Sapphire XC 3D printer 3D Printer Hardware

Velo3D (NYSE: VLD) delivered its first Sapphire XC 3D printer. Featuring 8 1-kW lasers, the Sapphire XC, or “Extra Capacity,” is Velo3D’s newest and largest metal 3D printer, made for faster production and larger parts. The Sapphire XC is a scaled-up version of the Sapphire printer, utilizing the same Flow print preparation software, the same Assure quality control software, and the same Intelligent Fusion manufacturing process. Sketchfab introduces 3D model CC0 dedication for cultural institutions AM Software

3D content platform Sketchfab made an announcement this week which will see high-quality 3D scans and models of cultural artefacts become more accessible through its platform. In short, cultural organizations using Sketchfab now have the ability to dedicate their 3D models to the Public Domain using a Creative Commons Public Domain identifier (CC0). As part of the announcement, Sketchfab has also unveiled collaborations with 27 cultural institutions from across the world, including the Smithsonian Institution.

Software company Dassault Systèmes and manufacturing service provider Xometry are partnering to offer customers an integrated solution for ordering parts that facilitates the production workflow from concept to production. DSM and partners present digital platform for I AM Tomorrow Challenge AM Software

In June 2019, global sciences company Royal DSM launched the I AM Tomorrow Challenge, a collaborative effort aimed at addressing and filling gaps in the AM value chain. At the time, DSM and its partners Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence and Ultimaker invited startups from around the world to apply for an accelerator program. MX3D and Altair redesign and 3D print optimized robotic arm AM Software

Amsterdam-based MX3D, a specialist in robotic metal 3D printing (many will know of its famous canal bridge project), teamed up with software company Altair to 3D print an optimized industrial robot arm for a robot provided by ABB Robotics. Siemens has signed an agreement to acquire Atlas 3D, Inc., a Plymouth, Indiana-based developer of software that works with direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) printers to automatically provide design engineers with the optimal print orientation and requisite support structures for additive parts in near real-time. 3DCeram introduces C3600 Ultimate for ceramics AM mass production 3D Printer Hardware

French-Japanese company 3DCeram Sinto, based in Limoges, is introducing at Formnext its latest 3D printer for advanced ceramics parts production. The new C3600 Ultimate features an impressive build volume of 600x600x300 mm and is capable of processing zirconia, alumina and a range of other materials. PTC to acquire cloud-based online CAD/CAE software provider Onshape AM Software

PTC signed a definitive with Onshape, creators of the first Software as a Service (SaaS) CAD/CAE product development platform. As per the agreement, PTC acquires Onshape for approximately $470 million. The acquisition is expected to accelerate PTC’s ability to attract new customers with a SaaS-based product offering and position the company to capitalize on the inevitable industry transition to SaaS. Pending regulatory approval and satisfaction of other closing conditions, the transaction is expected to be completed in November 2019.

Materials giant Evonik invests in 3D printing software startup Castor Money & Funding

Evonik Venture Capital, the investment arm of German chemical company Evonik, has invested in Castor Technologies, a startup whose software is helping AM adopters to identify how and where to use additive manufacturing for production. Evonik says the investment in the Israel-based startup will allow it to expand its business beyond selling materials for the 3D printing market into services, enabling customers to test the printability of parts.

nScrypt releases nRugged 3D printer/bioprinter built for harsh environments Bioprinting

This summer, bioprinting company nScrypt revealed an interesting partnership with the U.S. Military aimed at deploying a ruggedized version of its BioAssembly Tool (BAT) bioprinter to print samples in a forward-deployed desert environment. In July, the company also sent its bioprinter into space to be used aboard the ISS. Following the early successes of both initiatives, nScrypt has introduced the nRugged system—the first 3Dprinting/bioprinting platform built for harsh environments.

Industrifonden invests $1.5 million in Freemelt’s open source EBM technology Additive Manufacturing

Industrifonden, a venture capital investor based in Stockholm, led an investment round for 15 million SEK (Swedish Krona), about $1.5 million, to finance metal 3D printing company Freemelt. The money intended to fuel the next phase of the company’s growth, driving the metal 3D printing revolution forward with the development of the Freemelt One system. Freemelt is a Swedish company that is developing the first open-source EBM 3D printer, following the original patents on EBM expiring in 2016.

XYZprinting’s new da Vinci Color 5D combines 3D printing, 2D printing and laser engraving 3D Printer Hardware

Desktop 3D printer company XYZprinting has announced the latest 3D printer in its da Vinci series: the da Vinci Color 5D. The machine—which one can’t strictly call a 3D printer—combines full-color 3D printing with 2D inkjet paper printing and laser engraving in a single platform. XYZprinting will be showcasing its newest product at IFA 2019 from September 9 to 11 in Berlin.

California aerospace company acquires 6 MetalFAB1 systems 3D Printer Hardware

Additive Industries North America sold 6 MetalFAB1 systems to an undisclosed aerospace company located in California. Considering the cost of a MetalFAB1 system is over one million dollars per unit there aren’t many companies that could afford such a purchase. The list of large aerospace companies with facilities in California includes Northrop Grumman, CDG (a Boeing company) and GKN Aerospace (near San Diego), all of which are investing significantly in expanding their internal AM activities. In particular, GKN is a likely candidate as the Group had been a Beta client for Additive Industries, purchasing its first MetalFAB1 system in 2016, to make automotive parts.

MakerBot is launching METHOD X, a new manufacturing workstation engineered to challenge traditional manufacturing with real ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) material for durable parts, a 100°C chamber, and Stratasys SR-30 soluble supports. METHOD X can withstand up to 15°C higher temperatures, is up to 26% more rigid, and up to 12% stronger than modified ABS formulations used on desktop 3D printer competitors. MakerBot assures that Precision ABS parts printed on METHOD X have no warping or cracking that typically occurs when printing modified ABS on desktop platforms without heated chambers.

Israel-based Nano Dimension is taking its electronics 3D printing technology to the next level with the launch of the new DragonFly Lights-Out Digital Manufacturing (LDM) system. The industrial 3D printing system builds on the company’s established PCB 3D printing process, adding increased automation for 24/7 lights-out digital manufacturing. The new system is expected to unlock opportunities for low-volume manufacturing of multilayer PCBs, capacitors, coils, sensors, antennas and more.

Betatype works with nTopology to reduce AM production times AM Software

Betatype a UK company that specializes in optimizing designs for additive manufacturing presented a new application case where it highlights how a part can be AM-optimized beyond part performance (which is what the DfAM concept generally refers to) but also for the AM process itself. In this project, Betatype works with nTopology, a rapidly growing NYC-based developer of CAE and topology optimization software, to develop and produce a functionally optimized rocket nozzle part which is also process-optimized.

Lithoz, the Austrian leader in 3D printed ceramics, is not a company known for its aggressive marketing and communication efforts. Its high-level LCM ceramics photopolymerization AM technology is making huge steps forward, however, we don’t often hear about it. That’s, well, because the company does not tell many people about its progress. Even after Lithoz launched the disruptive, production-ready Cerafab S65, we only learned about its progress in the market when a small Australian company – 3rdAxis – purchased one.
