About Project

An Animal Crossing player loved the Aries rocking chair, a craftable houseware item in the New Horizons game. Her desirable effect was like the ancient Egyptian figures, so we first made two sandstone miniatures with ColorJet technology.

Challenge

To make the golden decorations on Aries look shiny, we painted on the statues but could exactly control the spreading. The client kindly offered a new plan of making one more with SLA technology, so painting on the resin surface would be quite easier.

Solution

• Step 1: 3D Modeling
  The client downloaded the models from the website The Models Resource: https://www.models-resource.com/nintendo_switch/animalcrossingnewhorizons/. The client sent us three files that are necessary for full-color 3D printing:
  model file .obj, material file .mtl, and texture map file .png.
• Step 2: Examination of the model
  There are some small problems with this 3D model.
  1) Some faces are not closed and the client mended them.
  2) The model has a low resolution so the print will have a low-poly style. Our 3D modeler smooths the model and adds details, draws the fleece.
• Step 3: Quoting
  The size required by the client is 7cm in the length and she ordered two copies.
  The printing cost applied with ColorJet technology is $70 for one piece.
• Step 4: ColorJet 3D Printing and Finishing
  The client is quite satisfied with the printing effect. But painting on the sandstone is hard to keep in the boundary. The paint is easily spreading to adjacent zones.
• Step 5: SLA 3D Printing and Finishing
  The client is quite nice with the condition, and orders another copy with SLA technology. Fine paint on the surface costs $120 and the aries body has an antique style.
