One of our recent projects was to create two 3.2m-high huabiao pillars for a client who wanted to decorate their office with a Chinese dragon totem. Huabiao is a type of ceremonial column that originated in ancient China and is often seen in front of palaces, temples, and tombs. They are usually made of marble and carved with intricate patterns and symbols.

We used FDM 3D printing technology to print the huabiao pillars with PLA material, which is a biodegradable and eco-friendly plastic. PLA has a smooth surface finish and can mimic the appearance of marble with a special coating. The coating also makes the pillars weather-proof and durable outdoors.

The design of the huabiao pillars was based on a traditional style that features coiled dragons and auspicious clouds. The dragons represent power, strength, and good luck, while the clouds symbolize harmony and peace. The whole pillar is decorated with these motifs, creating a stunning visual effect.

To print the huabiao pillars, we had to split the 3D model into pieces and print the sections separately, then assemble them together into one piece. Solution

• Step 1: The 3D model of the Huabiao pillar was created by using 3D modeling software. The model was based on a traditional Huabiao design that featured coiled dragons and auspicious clouds.
• Step 2: The 3D model was split into pieces by using 3D slicing software. The pieces were arranged to fit the size and shape of the FDM 3D printer鈥檚 build plate. The slicing software also generated the G-code instructions for the 3D printer to follow.
• Step 3: The pieces were printed using an FDM 3D printer with PLA material. The printer extruded the molten PLA filament layer by layer, following the G-code instructions. The printing process took several hours for each piece, depending on the size and complexity.
• Step 4: The printed pieces were removed from the build plate and cleaned by using a scraper and a brush. The excess material and support structures were removed by using a cutter and a plier. The pieces were inspected for any defects or errors.
• Step 5: The pieces were assembled into one piece by using screws, nuts, and bolts. The alignment and connection points were marked on the pieces beforehand. The assembled pillar was coated by using a special spray paint.
• Step 6: The coated pillar was transported to the client鈥檚 office by using a truck. The pillar was carefully loaded and secured on the truck bed. The pillar was delivered to the client鈥檚 office within a few days.
