About Project
Discover the beauty and symbolism of the qilin with this stunning 3D printed sculpture. Crafted using ColorJet technology, this full-color sandstone piece showcases the intricate details and vibrant hues of this mythical creature.
A Blend of Majestic Features
The qilin, a creature from East Asian folklore, embodies a harmonious blend of animal characteristics. With its deer-like body, dragon-like head, angelic wings, and flowing mane, this sculpture captures the essence of its legendary status.
Intricate Details and Vibrant Colors
The white sandstone base provides a neutral canvas for the qilin's vibrant colors. The gradual pink shades on its wings, hooves, beard, horns, and face add depth and dimension to the sculpture. Every whisker, tendril, and scale is meticulously detailed, bringing the qilin to life.
A Symbol of Good Fortune
In mythology, the qilin is often associated with good luck, prosperity, and serenity. This sculpture serves as a powerful symbol of these positive qualities, making it a perfect addition to any home or office.

Solution
- Step 1: Design Creation.聽A detailed 3D model of the qilin was designed using CAD software. The model included intricate features such as the dragon-like head, elongated facial features, prominent eyes, branching antlers, whiskers, tendrils, flowing mane, extended beard, large wings, and a curved tail.
- Step 2: Preparation of the Printer. The ColorJet 3D printer was prepared by loading the core material, CJP Full-color Sandstone, which was a powder-based substance, and the color binder. The printer’s build platform was calibrated to ensure precise layer deposition.
- Step 3: Layering of Core Material.聽A thin layer of the core powder material was spread evenly over the build platform using a roller. This step was repeated for each subsequent layer.
- Step 4: Jetting of Color Binder.聽The color binder was selectively jetted from the inkjet print heads onto the powder layer. This binder caused the powder to solidify and adhere to the previous layers. The color binder was jetted in specific areas to create the white and pink shades on the qilin’s wings, hooves, beard, horns, and face.
- Step 5: Lowering of Build Platform.聽After each layer was completed, the build platform was lowered to allow the next layer of powder to be spread and bonded. This process was repeated until the entire sculpture was formed.
- Step 6: Post-Processing.聽Once the printing was completed, the sculpture was carefully removed from the build platform. Excess powder was brushed off, and the sculpture was cleaned to reveal the detailed features and colors.
- Step 7: Infiltration.聽To enhance the strength and durability of the sculpture, it was infiltrated with a liquid adhesive. This step ensured that the sculpture maintained its structural integrity and vibrant colors.
- Step 8: Final Touches.聽Any minor imperfections were corrected, and the sculpture was given a final inspection to ensure it accurately represented the qilin’s mythical features and colors.
