Tmall.com, formerly Taobao Mall, is a Chinese-language website for business-to-consumer (B2C) online retail, spun off from Taobao, operated in China by Alibaba Group. It is a platform for local Chinese and international businesses to sell brand name goods to consumers in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
In April, Tmall held an exhibition in Shanghai to celebrate the Spring's coming and sell washing and nursing products under the Sakura theme. Before they executed the promotion campaign, Tmall found us to make some tiny capsule toys for the gashapon/gacha machine.
Tmall designed four types of toys of their mascot, a black cat. In each edition, the cat is wearing a sakura kimono, holding a paper fan, or just smile at you. Receiving their blueprint and requirements, we break the toy into the head and body to be put into the capsule better, and print them with PolyJet 3D printing respectively. The objects printed with PolyJet 3D printing need no more painting and have a wonderful tactility.
The cats are so cute that the gachas soon catch the eyes of people.
Solution
Step 1: 3D modeling based on the blueprints offered by Tmall. We model its head and body separately so the toy can be totally fit into the capsule.
Step 2: 3D printing the toys with PolyJet 3D printers. 3D printing is suitable for this kind of low-volume production.
Step 3: Little post-processing handwork includes sanding and polishing. To make it more shinny we apply some UV oil.
