About Project

Inspired by stories of ancient Chinese mythical beasts, this miniature collection imagines what the legendary creatures might have looked like as babies. Instead of emphasizing fearsome power, the designs use round faces, large eyes, tiny teeth, short limbs, expressive hands, and humorous poses to give each character a distinct, approachable personality.

Traditional references remain visible through curled horns, layered manes, cloud-like hair, forehead ornaments, symbolic objects, and lotus-inspired bases with geometric border patterns. A soft palette of peach, cream, coral, blue, and violet makes the figures feel warm and collectible, while brighter orange and red accents guide attention to fruit, eyes, and handheld objects.

The sculptures were produced in full color using Binder Jetting sandstone. Its fine granular texture is not hidden beneath heavy filling or glossy paint. Instead, the slightly rough surface supports the ancient-story theme, softens the pastel transitions, and gives fur, carved motifs, and layered bases a tactile mineral quality. Resin infiltration strengthens the printed bodies and enriches the color, while a matte protective finish preserves the intended texture.

Sandstone is heavier than many plastics, but the compact size keeps each miniature practical to handle and ship. The added mass also gives the broad-based figures reassuring stability on a desk or shelf. This balance of cultural storytelling, full-color detail, tactile material, and display weight makes the series suitable for museum shops, cultural gifts, tourism merchandise, collectibles, and branded souvenirs. Solution

  1. Step 1: Study traditional mythical-beast references and identify the horns, manes, ornaments, poses, objects, and decorative motifs needed to keep each character culturally recognizable.
  2. Step 2: Reinterpret the creatures with baby-like proportions, expressive faces, compact limbs, and playful gestures while maintaining a stable center of gravity.
  3. Step 3: Refine minimum walls, pointed features, fingers, teeth, layered fur, openings, and base details so they can survive printing, depowdering, handling, and shipping.
  4. Step 4: Create and proof the full-color texture maps, balancing soft skin tones and blue-violet bases with stronger accent colors for eyes, fruit, and accessories.
  5. Step 5: Nest the models in the powder bed and print the geometry and surface color together in sandstone using full-color Binder Jetting.
  6. Step 6: Excavate the fragile green parts and carefully remove loose powder from mouths, nostrils, fur layers, horns, hands, lotus petals, and recessed patterns.
  7. Step 7: Infiltrate the sandstone prints with resin to strengthen the bodies and deepen the printed colors without eliminating the desired granular character.
  8. Step 8: Apply a matte protective finish, inspect color and fragile details, verify that each base sits securely, and pack the miniatures for presentation or retail.
