About Project

EN: This miniature planter looks as if it belongs in Guanghan Palace, the legendary Moon Palace in Chinese mythology. Its cratered surface recalls the Moon, while a traditional Chinese meander, or key-fret, pattern circles the bowl. A raised pedestal gives the piece the character of a small ceremonial vessel, and the dark granular surface resembles a fragment of lunar rock.

The planter was made directly with Binder Jetting 3D printing. It is the finished printed product, not a sand mold for metal casting. Without conventional tooling, the process can reproduce the irregular craters, recessed pattern, planting cavity, and pedestal as one integrated design. The porous sand-based body allows air and moisture to move through the material. This planter was therefore designed without a conventional bottom drainage hole and can hold compact succulents directly when used with well-draining soil and controlled watering.

The combination of lunar imagery and Chinese ornament makes it especially suitable for the Mid-Autumn Festival, an East Asian celebration closely associated with the full Moon, family gatherings, and gift-giving. It could also work as cultural merchandise, hotel decor, or part of a limited-edition plant set. Here, the texture is not simply decorative: the material, manufacturing method, and cultural story all contribute to the finished object.

Solution

  • Step 1: Review the 3D model, including the crater layout, Chinese meander pattern, planting depth, wall thickness, and pedestal stability.
  • Step 2: Make sure the planting cavity and recessed details remain accessible for powder removal while retaining the hole-free base specified for this design.
  • Step 3: Print the planter as a single sand-based part using Binder Jetting, with no mold or separate metal-casting stage.
  • Step 4: Cure the printed part as required, remove it from the powder bed, and carefully clear loose sand from the cavity, craters, and decorative band.
  • Step 5: Inspect the rim, pedestal, fine details, internal cavity, and overall stability. Remove residual particles without smoothing away the intended granular texture.
  • Step 6: Add well-draining planting mix and a compact succulent. Because there is no conventional drainage hole, water sparingly and avoid prolonged saturation.
