About Project
This high-detail 3D print is a fantastic tribute to the legendary Don Calfa, immortalizing his most iconic role: Ernie Kaltenbrunner from the 1985 cult classic The Return of the Living Dead.
Don Calfa’s performance as the eccentric, Luger-wielding mortician remains a gold standard in horror-comedy. This statue perfectly captures Ernie’s stoic presence, featuring his signature work attire and a fallen ghoul at his feet. The crispness of the resin print highlights the incredible digital sculpting, from the folds in his sleeves to the intense expression that fans know so well.

Solution
- Step 1: The digital character was meticulously sculpted in 3D software to capture Don Calfa’s likeness and then converted into a printable STL file.
- Step 2: The file was processed through slicing software where support structures were strategically added to stabilize the Luger and limbs during printing.
- Step 3: The model was fabricated using SLA (Stereolithography) technology, where a high-precision UV laser was used to cure liquid resin layer by layer.
- Step 4: The printed statue was submerged in an isopropyl alcohol bath where excess uncured resin was thoroughly washed away.
- Step 5: The support structures were carefully removed, and the figure was placed in a UV curing chamber where its final structural integrity was reached.
- Step 6: The surface was lightly sanded to remove any remaining support marks, resulting in the smooth, gallery-quality finish seen here.
