SQ4D has upped the ante in the American construction 3D printing game. The company, which last July unveiled a 500-square-foot home it 3D printed in under 12 hours, has just completed the construction of an even more impressive structure. MX3D, an Amsterdam-based metal 3D printing company, has revealed a collaboration with Japanese architecture and engineering firm Takenaka. Together, the companies designed a Structural Steel Connector, which MX3D then 3D printed using its large-scale robotic printing technology, Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM).
A team of researchers from Purdue University, Cornell University and Case Western Reserve University is drawing inspiration from bones to make stronger, more resilient 3D printed structures for buildings, aircraft and more. The researchers have recreated a specific beam structure found within natural bone that provides strength and lifelong wear resistance using 3D technologies.
