Until now, implants and prostheses have mostly been made of steel or titanium. This has disadvantages as these materials do not always adapt optimally to patients and their bones. They can break and require repeat operations. Recent research by Heraeus Amloy together with the University of Graz is on the verge of a breakthrough, demonstrating that amorphous metals can be used to additively manufacture medical implants.
BIOMODEX, a digital health company that offers a 3D printed solution for patient-specific rehearsal and physician training, elected Karl Schweitzer as Chair of the Board of Directors, effective immediately. He succeeds Francois Thomas, who has served as Board Chair since 2019 and who will remain a member of the board.
Starting in May 2020, 3D LifePrints is providing a remote 3D modeling service for the Leeds General Infirmary NHS Paediatric cardiology team. This service will enable the team to visualize 3D rendered patient anatomy, derived from CT and MRI imaging for complex cases, and 3D print selected models on site.

In fact, if anything, it has accelerated. 3D LifePrints UK Ltd, one of the UK’s leading medical 3D printing organizations, has recently closed an investment round of £1.2M led by Fenwall Investments. The investment will be used to rapidly expand 3D LifePrints’ existing foothold in the UK’s medical sector and overseas and follows on from previous investment in 2017 and 2018.

UK-based company axial3D is taking another big step in its mission to help the healthcare sector adopt 3D printing technologies. Working with the Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeons at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, axial3D will provide a new in-house 3D printing facility to serve Newcastle Hospitals in England.
The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) have announced they will be launching a new medical 3D printing clinical data registry in order to collect 3D printing data at the point of clinical care. The registry is expected to launch as a pilot program in autumn 2019 and is expected to bolster the advancement of clinical 3D printing.
