As the AM wave continues to grow in Japan, Tokyo-based JEOL released its new JAM-5200EBM electron beam melting metal AM system. The company, which specializes in scientific metrology systems (including electron microscopes) leveraged its know-how of electron microscopes and electron beam lithography systems for semiconductor manufacturing, to develop a new EBM system with higher power, higher density and higher speed.
Wayland Additive officially unveiled its breakthrough metal additive manufacturing (AM) technology NeuBeam, with the commercial launch of its first platform: Calibur3. During a virtual launch hosted by the executive team from headquarters in Huddersfield, a wide range of attendees from all across the world were introduced to the new Calibur3 machine.
Global medical device company LimaCorporate has confirmed that it has started construction of its forthcoming on-site 3D printing facility at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York. First confirmed in January this year, the partners held a ground breaking ceremony at the site at the end of May. Building works are scheduled for completion by 2020, and the center itself is expected to be in operation early in the same year.
Swiss medical company Medacta officially initiated the commercial use of 3DMetal Femoral Cones for revision knee arthroplasty after successfully receiving clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CE marking.
China-based orthopedic implant manufacturer AK Medical has added eight GE Arcam EBM Q10plus 3D printers to its fleet, citing a rising demand for implants across the country. The company has been using EBM (Electron Beam Melting) technology since 2009, working closely with a range of clinical and R&D experts to standardize and certify additively manufactured medical devices in China. Moving forward, AK has stated that it will focus its efforts on 3D printing while expanding beyond just additively manufactured bone joints.
In the aftermath of GE Aviation’s announced $1.4 billion acquisition of Arcam AB and SLM Solutions), investors showed confidence in the two metal 3D printer manufacturers and – as was to be expected – remained somewhat skeptical as to the short and medium term benefits of this deal for GE, with the stock losing a few percentage points in the immediate aftermath of the announcement (to then recuperate most of the lost ground, though).
