Boxing Hand Grenade Prototyped and Created Using 3D Printing

The Boxing Hand Grenade, the creation of a UK-based personal trainer and martial arts instructor, John Docherty, was developed after sustaining a cumulative injury to his hand and wrist. The handheld device has been ergonomically designed to fit the contours of the hand and to be worn under traditional boxing hand wraps inside boxing gloves.

When John first conceptualized the Boxing Hand Grenade he was faced with a race to be first to market, he then turned to UK-based Protolabs – renowned for their rapid prototyping and on-demand production – to produce a prototype through its PolyJet 3D printing service.

“As an entrepreneur with limited resources I needed to find a manufacturing partner that understood what I was trying to create and how important it was to get the product to market before another innovation came to light”, said John, “Protolabs, alongside TORUS Technology Group, were able to provide us with multiple functional 3D printed prototypes, which allowed us to pressure test and adjust our product. We are grateful to have received further feedback from experts within the boxing and martial arts community, which allowed us to insightfully refine the design of our BHG-1 and BHG-2 Fist-loaders through a process of research and development.”

Boxing Hand Grenade’s latest release, the GhostGrip 3D boxing fist-loaders, are the result of a “breakthrough resin-based 3D printing process that uses digital light projection, oxygen-permeable optics, and engineering-grade materials to produce polymeric parts with exceptional mechanical properties”, Carbon, USA.

The GhostGrip 3D Fist-loader leverages the Carbon DLS printing process to create an ultra-lightweight fist-loader which, according to Boxing Hand Grenade, “provides an exceptional mechanical response.”

The GhostGrip 3D Fist-loader offers a functional elastomer lattice structure that has been optimized by Carbon application engineers to create a product that will enhance the structural integrity, impact shock absorption, and kinesthetic sense of the striking fist within all boxing activities.
