About Project

Feast your eyes on this charming 5cm tall miniature of Henry Fox, brought to life through the magic of Mimaki full-color 3D printing! This little guy showcases the impressive capabilities of the Mimaki technology, delivering a smooth surface finish straight off the printer. The vibrant blue and crisp white give Henry a playful and eye-catching appearance, making him a delightful addition to any desk or collection.

One of the truly fascinating aspects of Mimaki's 3D printing technique is its unique approach to color. By utilizing UV-curable inks and precise inkjet technology, Mimaki printers can deposit and cure photopolymers layer by layer, with the colors directly integrated during the printing process. This eliminates the need for extensive post-processing typically associated with coloring 3D prints, like painting or dyeing. The UV curing process ensures each layer hardens almost instantly upon printing, contributing to the dimensional accuracy and the smooth feel of the final object.

However, it's worth noting a couple of nuances we observed with this particular print. The vibrant blue, while striking, leans slightly towards a greenish hue compared to the original design. Additionally, due to the nature of the inkjet technology, smaller colored areas tend to bleed slightly into larger adjacent areas. This means fine details, such as the crisp separation in Henry's eyes and nose, appear slightly enlarged, and the white gaps in his chest logo have closed up. While these are minor imperfections, they offer a realistic glimpse into the current limitations of this technology when dealing with intricate color boundaries.

Despite these minor points, the overall quality and the convenience of achieving full-color prints with minimal post-curing using Mimaki's technology are truly remarkable. The smooth surface and the direct color application open up exciting possibilities for creating prototypes, figurines, and personalized items with a vibrant touch.

Solution

  • Step 1: A digital 3D model of Henry Fox was created using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Step 2: The 3D model was then prepared for printing by slicing it into numerous thin horizontal layers.
  • Step 3: Instructions for color application and layer deposition were generated by the printer software.
  • Step 4: UV-curable ink droplets of various colors were precisely jetted onto the build platform, layer by layer, by the Mimaki 3D printer’s print heads.
  • Step 5: Immediately after each layer was deposited, it was cured by a UV light source integrated within the printer. This process solidified the photopolymer material and locked in the applied colors.
  • Step 6: This layer-by-layer deposition and curing process was repeated until the complete 5cm Henry Fox miniature was formed.
  • Step 7: Once printing was finished, the build platform was carefully removed from the printer.
  • Step 8: Minimal post-processing was required. Excess powder or support structures (if any) were gently removed.
  • Step 9: The full-color Henry Fox miniature was then ready for inspection and delivery.
