About Project

Imagine miniature impellers, or fan blades, crafted from translucent, orange plastic. They cannot be used as functional parts, but if you wish, you could assemble them onto toy submarines.

We recently printed a batch of these impellers using SLA 3D printing with a high-temp resin that can withstand temperatures up to 100°C. The result? A set of pieces that look both intricate and robust.

Each impeller features multiple curved blades radiating from a central hub, creating a circular opening. This design ensures optimal airflow or fluid flow, making them essential components in various machines.

We printed two clear and two frosted versions. Both sets underwent basic support removal and sanding, but they still retain visible layer lines. To enhance the clarity of the clear impellers, we applied a thin layer of clear acrylic oil.

Solution

  • Step 1: The 3D models of the impeller miniatures were designed with multiple curved blades radiating from a central hub.
  • Step 2: The designs were prepared for SLA 3D printing. The printer was loaded with SLA Clear High-temp Resin-100℃.
  • Step 3: The printing process was initiated, and the miniatures were printed layer by layer.
  • Step 4: The printed miniatures were removed from the printer once the printing was complete.
  • Step 5: Support structures were carefully removed to avoid damaging the delicate blades.
  • Step 6: Basic sanding was performed to smooth out any rough areas, but polishing was not done, leaving visible layer lines.
  • Step 7: A thin layer of clear acrylic oil was applied to the clear miniatures for added clarity.
  • Step 8: The miniatures were inspected for quality and consistency.
