About Project
This project turns music into something you can both hear and display. The sculptural speaker uses a large treble clef as its central visual element, supported by an ornamental base and surrounded by flowing, instrument-inspired structures. A compact speaker driver is integrated into the composition, allowing the object to work as both an audio product and a piece of cultural-creative decor.
Binder Jet sand 3D printing was selected to manufacture the sculptural components directly, without casting. The powder bed supported the sweeping curves, open loops, lattice details, and nested decorative elements during printing, reducing the need for conventional tooling or separately built support structures. After desanding, the porous prints were infiltrated with epoxy resin to improve strength and consolidate their surfaces. The two main color groups were produced as separate components: each complete section was spray-painted either dark gray-black or metallic copper, then aligned and securely assembled with the speaker hardware.
The result demonstrates how sand Binder Jetting can move beyond conventional foundry molds and become part of an experimental design workflow for art, displays, customized housings, and functional cultural products. Solution
- Step 1: The digital model was reviewed for overall stability, wall thickness, delicate openings, base contact, speaker placement, wiring access, and assembly interfaces.
- Step 2: The sculptural components were prepared for Binder Jet sand printing, with accessible openings for removing loose sand from loops, cavities, and narrow internal passages.
- Step 3: The parts were produced using Binder Jet sand 3D printing. The powder bed supported the complex curves and open decorative geometry during production.
- Step 4: After the binder had cured, the components were carefully removed from the build box and cleaned with brushes, suction, and controlled air to release unbound sand.
- Step 5: The porous sand prints were infiltrated with epoxy resin to consolidate the particles, strengthen the components, and prepare the surfaces for finishing.
- Step 6: Following a controlled priming and spray-painting workflow, the separate component groups were finished as complete sections, one in dark gray-black and the other in metallic copper.
- Step 7: The painted sections, speaker driver, and related components were aligned and securely assembled, followed by checks of stability, fit, cable routing, surface appearance, and basic speaker operation.
