About Project
This little character feels like he has just jumped out of a fairy tale pond. The goldfish prince figurine wears a bright red outfit and a playful goldfish-shaped hat, complete with big round eyes, fins, and turquoise details. In his hands, he gently holds a tiny fish, making the whole figure feel sweet, curious, and a little magical.
The most eye-catching part of this project is the contrast between the soft character body and the transparent water effect. The boy’s red costume, rosy cheeks, dark hair, fish hat, and small facial expression were kept in a gentle matte finish, while the blue transparent water splash was polished and coated to create a wet, glossy look. This separation makes sense from a production perspective: the water splash has many curved, raised, and recessed areas, so it would be easier to polish and coat properly as a separate part.
For character models that combine opaque colors and transparent visual effects, full-color 3D printing can help designers test the complete look before mass production. In this case, PolyJet 3D printing allowed the figure and water splash to be produced with different material effects, while post-processing brought out the clarity and shine of the transparent base. Solution
- Step 1: The 3D model was reviewed before production, including the goldfish-shaped hat, facial features, small fish, hands, red costume, shoes, and transparent water splash geometry.
- Step 2: The character body and water splash were prepared as separate printable parts, so the opaque figurine and transparent base could be processed with different finishing methods.
- Step 3: The character was printed with PolyJet technology, where photopolymer materials were jetted and UV-cured layer by layer to form the colored figurine details.
- Step 4: The water splash was printed separately with transparent photopolymer resin, allowing the curved splash shape and blue translucent effect to be produced as one integrated part.
- Step 5: Support material was removed after printing, and delicate areas such as the fish, hands, hat fins, hair, shoes, and splash gaps were carefully cleaned.
- Step 6: The transparent water splash was sanded, polished, and sprayed with clear acrylic oil to improve clarity, surface gloss, and the wet-water visual effect.
- Step 7: The character body was kept in a softer matte finish, while the finished water splash was assembled with the figurine to create contrast between the red character and glossy blue base.
- Step 8: The final piece was inspected from the front, side, and back to confirm the color accuracy, transparent effect, surface finish, assembly fit, and overall toy-like display quality.
