Mihaela Vlasea, an engineering professor at The University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada who specializes in additive manufacturing, has been recognized as one of the top young engineers in manufacturing in Canada and the United States. Vlasea, who is associate research director at the Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing Lab (MSAM), was honored by the SME association.
A team of scientists are developing a new type of customized 3D printed insole that can benefit diabetes patients suffering from foot ulcers. The insoles, developed at Staffordshire University in the UK, integrate optimized cushioning stiffness to improve foot health.
Microwave plasma technology company 6K (formerly Amastan) has announced that its AM division, 6K Additive, has commissioned the first two commercial UniMelt systems for the production of metal powders. The systems, which will be in operation at the company’s 40,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Bugettstown, PA, are capable of producing 100 tons of powder per year.

Made In Space (MIS), the company that brought 3D printing to the International Space Station, has been acquired by Redwire, a specialist in mission critical space solutions and a producer of space components. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but the acquisition comprised of Made In Space and Made In Space Europe, the original company’s sister company based in Luxembourg.
