About Project

If you are looking for a resin material that can produce stiff and pliable parts that bend and spring back quickly under repeated use, you might want to check out the new Formlabs Tough Resin 1500.聽This resin is designed for the Formlabs line of desktop stereolithography (SLA) 3D printers, including the Form 3 and Form 2.聽It has material properties that fall between Durable Resin and Tough 2000 Resin, making it a resilient, robust and versatile material.

To demonstrate the performance of this resin, we printed an engineering sample part that is commonly used to test materials. The part is a bracket with some hollows, which requires high accuracy and strength.聽The part was printed with a layer thickness of 100 microns and post-cured for 60 minutes at 70 掳C. The result was impressive: the part had a smooth surface finish, a dark grey color, and a high level of detail. The part was also able to withstand bending and twisting without breaking or deforming.

The Tough Resin 1500 is ideal for prototyping functional assemblies, snap fits, hinges, jigs and fixtures, and connectors undergoing temporary deflection or high impacts.聽It also has a biocompatibility certification for long-term skin contact, making it suitable for wearables, personal protective equipment, and other consumer goods.聽The resin has a tensile modulus of 1.5 GPa, an elongation at break of 51%, and a heat deflection temperature of 52 掳C at 0.45 MPa.

Solution

  • Step 1: The 3D model of the part was uploaded to the Formlabs PreForm software, which automatically generated the support structures and sliced the model into layers.
  • Step 2: The Formlabs Tough Resin 1500 cartridge was inserted into the Form 3 or Form 2 SLA printer, and the resin tank was filled with the resin.
  • Step 3: The print settings were selected, such as the layer thickness (100 microns), the orientation, and the density of the supports.
  • Step 4: The print job was started, and the printer used a laser to selectively cure the resin layer by layer, creating the part and the supports.
  • Step 5: After the print was completed, the build platform was removed from the printer, and the part was carefully detached from the platform using a removal tool.
  • Step 6: The part was transferred to a wash station, where it was immersed in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and agitated for 10 minutes to remove any uncured resin.
  • Step 7: The part was then dried with compressed air or a paper towel, and the supports were removed using flush cutters or snips.
  • Step 8: The part was placed in a curing chamber, such as the Form Cure, and exposed to a specific temperature (70 掳C) and light wavelength (405 nm) for 60 minutes to achieve optimal mechanical properties.
  • Step 9: The part was inspected for any defects or flaws, and optionally sanded, painted, or coated to improve its appearance or functionality.
