This beautifully curled-up cat sculpture is not a sleeping feline, but a hyper-realistic full-color 3D printed model made using Mimaki technology. Capturing the serene posture of a cat at rest, it offers a striking illusion of life through precise coloration and detailed texturing.

The cat depicted in the sculpture has a short, sleek coat with rich dark fur, transitioning from deep charcoal black to warm chestnut brown along the body and limbs. Its face is tilted gently sideways, with golden eyes gazing softly outward. Cream-colored accents on its paws and underside add contrast and bring out the natural markings of what appears to be a black bicolor or tuxedo shorthair cat. Even the paw pads are delicately rendered in detail, with a soft pink tint and distinct black toe beans visible.

Solution

• Step 1: A high-resolution 3D model of a curled-up shorthair cat was designed using sculpting software. Accurate anatomical proportions and realistic fur texture were incorporated into the geometry.
• Step 2: High-definition color maps were applied to the model, simulating deep black fur, brown highlights, white limbs, and subtle shading around the face and ears.
• Step 3: The model was hollowed out to reduce material usage and printing cost, while ensuring the structural integrity remained intact.
• Step 4: The prepared file was exported in a compatible format and sent to the Mimaki 3DUJ-553 full-color 3D printer, which supports over 10 million colors and transparent materials.
• Step 5: The model was printed layer by layer using UV-curable photopolymer resin. At each step, colored ink droplets were jetted onto the surface, achieving full-spectrum coloration directly during the print.
• Step 6: Upon completion, the sculpture was carefully detached from the build plate. Residual support materials were removed using a gentle wash process to protect fine details.
• Step 7: The model underwent UV post-curing to solidify the structure and lock in the color fidelity.
• Step 8: Final quality checks and surface inspections were conducted. Minor touch-ups were applied to ensure the sculpture maintained its lifelike realism and professional finish.
