An old client ordered an 8cm-high statue of Aurora the penguin in the game Animal Crossing. The modeling work took one month and she raised some helpful advice for the model.
As the penguin has a bulgy belly and its volume is large, it costs a lot with PolyJet full-color printing. If we hollow its body, it costs $200+, or else the cost would be $300+. The client then accepted using ColorJet technology.
Challenge
The client wanted the penguin to wear a knitted sweater, and we chose a knit pattern to map on its sweater. The knit pattern should be dark enough to be visible on the print.
To cut down the cost, we need to hollow the model and it would leave an obvious circle on the statue. After communication, the client agreed to locate the hole in the back.
The first print had some flaws on its beak, and we reflected the problem to her, modified the model and matched the color again.
Solution
Step 1: 3D Modeling
Our 3D modeler firstly builds the no-color statue of Aurora and makes revisions after receiving the client’s advice. Then color the model and add patterns to her sweater.
Step 2: Quoting
The size required by the client is 8cm-tall including the base.
The printing cost applied with ColorJet technology is less than $100 for one piece.
Step 3: ColorJet 3D Printing
The first print has some errors on Aurora’s face generated from adding the base. We send the photos to the client and ask if there are any other places that need to be modified besides the errors, and tune the color again.
Step 4: Post-processing
Glue the circle part into the hole on her back. Spray with clear acrylic oil to make it look glossy.
