It was in the air, and now it’s official. TRUMPF has acquired the joint venture with SISMA in Italy completely which means the German company’s additive business will now focus on the medical and dental businesses as well.
Ditzingen-based TRUMPF and Vicenza-based SISMA Spa formed the joint venture in 2014 to co-develop their additive manufacturing businesses leveraging SISMA’s LMF (laser metal fusion, a type of laser powder bed fusion) technology. This allowed TRUMPF to re-enter a market it had first explored during the previous decade and subsequently abandoned as considered not mature enough.

Up to now, TRUMPF held 55 percent of the shares in the joint venture which led to the development of TRUMPF’s TruPrint 1000 system first (which was based on SISMA’s mysint 100 platform) and then on to the larger TruePrint 2000 and TruPrint 3000, with corresponding mysint systems from SISMA. As a result of the acquisition, TRUMPF will carry on SISMA’s additive business in the industrial, dental, and medical markets. The two companies have now signed an agreement to this effect.
Manufacturing on Demand
In the context of the sale of the joint venture and its own LMF division, SISMA plans to focus on the jewelry and fashion industry in the future and to distribute LMF machines from TRUMPF for these markets. TRUMPF SISMA is based in Schio in northern Italy. Around 60 employees work there in the development and production of metal 3D printing machines with Laser Metal Fusion technology. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
TRUMPF now covers the AM market with solutions in both the primary laser technologies: laser metal fusion (LMF) and laser metal deposition (LMD). The company is targeting the industrialization of 3D printing via a complete solution comprising digitalization, services, and additive production systems. Overall TRUMPF has gained nearly 20 years of experience building robust and reliable laser 3D printers, as well as highly productive laser processing machines for industrial series production.
