It may have seemed impossible only a couple of years ago – due to high costs of hardware and materials – but life-size 3D printing is now something that consumers can do. It’s not easy, it takes time and dedication. But a growing community of enthusiasts has been creating some amazing projects and there is a dedicated Facebook community – aptly named Life-size 3D print – that tracks them all. We asked the community’s founder, Jeff Vaesken, to highlight some of the most impressive projects so far and they did not disappoint.

AI SpaceFactory wins $500,000 NASA 3D Printed Habitat Challenge first prize Aerospace

After 30 hours of 3D printing over four days of head-to-head competition, NASA and partner Bradley University of Peoria, Illinois, have awarded $700,000 to two teams vying to go down in history as the first 3D Printed Habitat Challenge winner. A prize of $500,000 was awarded to New York-based AI SpaceFactory. Second-place and $200,000 went to Pennsylvania State University of University Park.

FIT AG adopts Quintus Technologies high pressure heat treatment for 3D printed parts Additive Manufacturing

The FIT Additive Manufacturing Group is preparing to install a state-of-the-art hot isostatic press (HIP) with Uniform Rapid Quenching (URQ) from Swedish leader in high pressure technology Quintus Technologies. The press will allow the AM company to enhance its productivity and address the stringent requirements for industry-grade 3D printed metal series parts.

Aurora Labs announces fully operational RMP1 Beta 3D printer Additive Manufacturing

Australian metal 3D printing company Aurora Labs has announced the launch of the RMP1 Beta Printer, a fully operational pre-production 3D printer. The launch of the beta 3D printer takes Aurora Labs one step closer to commercialization goal. The next big step will be to gather valuable feedback from early customers for its metal RMP1 production 3D printer, which is expected to be released later this year.
