3DPrinTravel: Bring Every Destination a 3D Printed Piece of Itself

Helsinki Cathedral, Helsinki, Finland

Italian engineer Angelo D’Angelo has two big obsessions: travel and 3D printing. Worthy obsessions indeed, even on their own, but the creative D’Angelo proposed a way to combine his two passions into an ongoing project. D’Angelo is a writer of multiple travel blogs and has been engaged in 3D printing since 2011. Now, whenever he travels, he brings some 3D printed content to each city.

“Basically, what I want to do is to create models of monuments (or download them) of the places I want to go, 3D print them using different materials according to the models, and then take photos of the models in front of the real monuments, and then I share them in my I used the hashtag #3DPrinTravel on my Instagram profile to take photos with the model on my profile.”

Palace of the Parliament, Bucharest, Romania

He called the project #3DPrinTravel, which is a simple concept. Before heading to the new city, D’Angelo chose one of the landmark monuments of the location, and then searched online for a 3D model of the location; if he couldn’t find it, he would design his own model and print it out. He carried the 3D printed model with him, and when he arrived at his destination, he took a 3D printed miniature in front of the actual monument or site.

The project started in 2015 as a 3D printed model of the Duomo di Milano or Milan Cathedral, located in Angelo’s hometown of Milan. A few days later, on a trip to Athens, he decided to do the same thing with the Parthenon. The whim then turned into a project. D’Angelo bought his own FABtotum 3D printer before traveling around the Balkans and the 3D printed model of the Skopje Orthodox Church in Macedonia; the Orthodox Cathedral of Tirana, Albania; and the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Podgorica, Montenegro, all designed in Tinkercad.

Since then, #3DPrinTravel has grown into a collection of 30+ models from 25+ different countries in Europe, Asia, and America in less than three years.
