As the world continues to face the COVID-19 pandemic, testing is still one of the most important ways that the virus will be understood and contained until a vaccine is developed. As we’ve seen, 3D printing has been used to help meet the demand for nasopharyngeal swabs to ramp up testing. However, there is another lack that we had not accounted for: swabbers.
To accelerate the transition from preclinical studies with laboratory animals to clinical studies with humans, specialists at the biotechnological research laboratory 3D Bioprinting Solutions (3DBio) developed a method for the scalable production of 3D spheroids in the quantities necessary to accurately determine the specific activity of pharmacological molecules in the body of COVID-19 infected patients, thus accelerating the discovery process for anti-COVID-19 drugs.
BIOMODEX, a digital health company that offers a 3D printed solution for patient-specific rehearsal and physician training, elected Karl Schweitzer as Chair of the Board of Directors, effective immediately. 3D printing company Formlabs has not been idle since the novel coronavirus was declared a pandemic. The company has used its resources to support COVID-19 relief efforts with face shields, nasal swabs and more. Most recently, Formlabs revealed it has been granted emergency use authorization by the FDA to 3D print adapters which can convert BiPAP machines into much-needed ventilator systems. The company says it has the capacity to produce up to 3,000 3D printed adapters a day, which can be deployed to hospitals treating critically ill COVID-19 patients.

German additive manufacturing company Rapid Shape has announced a partnership with dental manufacturer VOCO, also based in Germany. The companies are combining their capabilities—including 3D printing systems and dental-grade materials—to offer their customers more freedom and flexibility when choosing what materials to work with. In short, the companies will work to qualify more dental materials for additive manufacturing.
