Creating amazing colour effects with 3D printed nanostructures Research & Education

Forget dyes and pigments, researchers from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have developed a new way to create colour effects using a computational design tool and 3D printing. The novel process uses the design tool to automatically generate 3D printable nanostructures which create defined colours when light is shone through them.

DfAM meets DFMA at upcoming International Forum in Rhode Island AM Software

DFMA is an existing concept for software used in Design for Manufacture and Assembly. As AM seeks to eliminate a lot of the “assembly” from manufacturing, the thirty-third annual International Forum on Design for Manufacture and Assembly, organized by Boothroyd Dewhurst, will also focus on how AM – and specifically Design for Additive Manufacturing – will affect the future of DFMA. DfAM is a design approach that focuses on using complex, optimized geometries to reduce the need for subassemblies and thus improving a part’s quality.

Architchen: transforming Taiwan’s ceramic industry with 3D printing and parametric design Additive Manufacturing

Founded in 2015 by RenJie Huang and HanYuan Tsao, Architchen is a Taiwanese architectural design studio that has developed a particular affinity for 3D printing ceramics. What sets Architchen apart from many of the other designers working with 3D printed ceramics is that it is not just interested in using the technology for producing pottery and homewares. Rather, it has leveraged ceramic AM to express and create parametrically designed tiles which fulfil an architectural purpose.

Aminimal designer John Briscella’s 3D printed shoe concept takes next step in digital design Consumer Products

John Briscella is a former Autodesk Pier 9 resident designer (like Anouk Wipprecht and other 3D printing celebs) who has been experimenting with some advanced generative design capabilities for a growing range of consumer products. He has since launched Aminimal, his and his design partner’s Lana Blum’s online shop for parametrically designed 3D printed jewelry, and his own design studio for generatively designed 3D printed furniture. This generatively designed shoe, built using nTopology software, is one of John Briscella’s latest concepts and shows the direction that his design style is taking for a growing range of consumer products.
