CTA requests tariff exemptions for 3D printers, robots and more Legislation

While the United States Trade Representative Office (USTR) has made certain exemptions in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic—including waiving tariffs on imported ventilators, oxygen masks and nebulizers—a number of U.S. trade groups, including the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), have requested to broaden the scope of tariff-free products. Reuters reports that the CTA has called on the USTR to waive tariffs on products including 3D printers, drones, robots and personal computers that are made in China.

London large-format 3D printing company Ai Build open-sourced a unique face shield design – which it names Face Shield X – in an attempt to tackle the global shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) with advanced additive manufacturing technology [download link in comments below]. Due to slow response in the early phases of the pandemic, the UK is currently the European nation that is hardest hit by Coronavirus, as the situation improves in Italy and Spain.

Heraeus AMLOY and TRUMPF advance 3D printed amorphous metals Materials

Heraeus AMLOY, a specialist in amorphous metals, has partnered with machine manufacturing company TRUMPF to advance the 3D printing of amorphous metals. The group of materials, also known as metallic glasses, demonstrate exceptional strength (twice as strong as steel) but with less weight and more elasticity. Through their collaboration, the companies aim to establish additive manufacturing as a standard production process for amorphous metals.

University of Nottingham designs certified 3D printed face shields for NHS AM Industry

A team of engineers from the University of Nottingham has developed a 3D printed face shield that has been certified by CE for use in the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. The team is leveraging 3D printing resources from the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Additive Manufacturing as well as from local partners to produce and deliver 5,000 face shields to Nottingham’s NHS and community healthcare workers.

Made In Space CEO Andrew Rush appointed to NASA Advisory Council Aerospace

Andrew Rush, the President and CEO of Made In Space, has been appointed to serve on the NASA Advisory Council (NAC) as a representative member, and as Chair of its Regulatory and Policy Committee for a three-year term. Made In Space has worked with NASA in recent years to implement 3D printing aboard the International Space Station and to develop innovative satellite manufacturing technologies.

University of Michigan develops VentMI, a personalized splitter for ventilators AM Industry

A team from the University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine has developed a personalized 3D printed vent-splitter device that allows for multiple patients to receive tailored pressures from the same ventilator unit. The device, called VentMI, has been licensed by a local startup, MakeMedical LLC, and could help to improve treatment for patients suffering from severe COVID-19 symptoms.
