On Tuesday, December 14, 2021, the German University of Technology in Oman, GUtech, completed 3D printing the walls of what so far is the largest 3D printed building in made with real concrete. The importance of the event was marked by the presence of His Excellency Sultan Al-Habsi, Minister of Finance of Oman together with more than 200 guests including several ministers and VIPs of Oman, who attended the event in Muscat, the capital of Oman.

The introduction of 3D printing – in any form – into the construction industry is among the most fascinating and, at the same time, challenging endeavor. On the one hand, the most advanced and technologically complex, digital manufacturing processes; on the other an industry that has notoriously been slow to introduce change. For these reasons, many see construction as the area with the highest potential for 3D printing innovation. And business. The shift is going to be gradual and any potential adopter will benefit from introducing 3D printing technologies that can significantly enhance traditional construction practices. Part of the magic of 3D printing is that it has, in its own manner, helped us to see our relationship to the natural world in new and interesting ways. That is, while many technologies might obstruct our relationship to nature, 3D printing – in the hands of the right designer or researcher – can bring us closer to it. Such is the case in Sanhelden’s most recent project: Grotto Façade.

XTreeE, a France-based specialist in 3D printing concrete and construction, is reportedly working on a new project for a customer in the Caribbean. The project in question—a joint effort by XTreeE, Martinique-based telecoms infrastructure company Art & Fact Innovation and engineering firm Lamoureux & Ricciotti—consists of 3D printing 12-meter-tall telecom towers that blend seamlessly into the environment.

Arup and CLS Architetti have shared plans to showcase a 3D printed one-bedroom house at Milan’s design festival, Salone del Mobile next month. 3D Housing 05 has been designed to be disassembled and relocated. The team aims to demonstrate that 3D printing concrete technology is now advanced enough to produce flexible and sustainable buildings, quickly and affordably.
