SLM Solutions Group has received an order by MAN Energy Solutions (“MAN ES”), a leading technology solutions provider and a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, for an NXG XII 600. The powerful 12-laser Selective Laser Melting system is well suited for the energy sector as it can meet the needs for a broad spectrum of robust, highly stressed applications that call for stringent mechanical properties.
Since 2019, MAN ES has successfully developed, tested, and implemented AM applications using an SLM 280 PS. However, to meet the growing demand for large-scale AM parts, MAN ES required a machine with a greater envelope size. The NXG Xll 600 with its 600x600mm² area is the perfect solution for MAN ES’ requirements. Combined with its higher productivity, MAN ES will utilize the machine for the serial production of components for technology solutions within the marine, energy, and industrial sectors.
Anders Such, Head of Additive Manufacturing at MAN Energy Solutions, commented: “We are pleased to continue our successful cooperation with SLM Solutions. The NXG Xll 600 represents the next step for the industrialization of additive manufacturing at MAN Energy Solutions. On the one hand, this machine enables us to manufacture large components using economically competitive AM technology. On the other hand, it helps to make the existing AM business cases even more attractive. This perfectly aligns with our company target to further develop innovative production technologies.”
Manufacturing on Demand
The order from MAN ES is indicative of the significant value proposition that the NXG XII 600 offers the energy sector. The game-changing system can produce large, complex, and lightweight parts that are impossible to produce traditionally. And, by using less material, the carbon footprint of components is reduced. Furthermore, the system allows optimized spare part management, shorter delivery times, and decreased CAPEX. The material cost savings and its positive environmental impact make it an extremely attractive solution.
“Yet again, we are delighted and proud to gain the trust of MAN Energy Solutions,” commented Jonas Mersch, Product Manager at SLM Solutions. ” Not only does the NXG Xll 600 offer unrivaled productivity, but its fully automated powder supply station and the machine’s independent depowering unit allow for seamless serial production. With the NXG Xll 600, MAN ES can provide innovative solutions for their customers and the industry, meet emerging market needs, and test new parts. We are thrilled to watch it meet and exceed these demands head-on.”
According to the consulting company AMPOWER, the total value of system sales within the energy sector is expected to almost triple by 2025 compared to 2020, surpassing €150 million in value, while the installed base is expected to increase over 50% to nearly 1,700 systems worldwide. The NXG XII 600 will be used on-site at MAN Energy Solutions’ Additive Manufacturing Center in Oberhausen, Germany. There, MAN experts push the industrialization process of metal 3D printing to fulfill the needs of customers worldwide.
