Union Pacific Turns to 3D Printing to Help Modernize America’s Railroads Additive Manufacturing

The railroad infrastructure is what really made America great. Today, much like other key infrastructures in the US, the US train network is having a hard time keeping up with the advancements made by other regions including Europe and Asia. While we wait for Elon Musk’s hyperloop, Union Pacific is applying 3D printing technology to make locomotive operations safer and more efficient, much like NASA is finding ways to use 3D printing to provide necessities for colonizing Mars.

Microfluidics Design Wins Print the Future Competition and Will Be 3D Printed on ISS Aerospace

In order to drive innovation forward in space manufacturing technology, Enterprise In Space (EIS), a non-profit program of the National Space Society (NSS), has chosen the grand-prize-winning university students in its Print the Future competition. Announced at its 36th annual NSS International Space Development Conference (ISDC) in St. Louis, Missouri last weekend, the winner is Team ProtoFluidics’ microfluidic modules from University of Pennsylvania. Undergraduate students Adam Zachar, Laura Gao and Jaimie Carlson designed 3D printable modules that enable rapid prototyping of microfluidic experiments aboard the ISS.

Nervous System Uses New Formlabs Fuse 1 to 3D Print Entire Kinematics Dress AM Software

In preparation for the launch of the innovative, Fuse 1 desktop SLS system, Formlabs contacted leading 3D printing designers N-e-r-v-o-u-s S-y-s-t-e-m about using some of their Kinematics dress designs for their new secret project. They were particularly interested in printing a Kinematics garments, but the Fuse 1 machine is MUCH smaller than the 3D printer that fabricated previous Nervous Systems garments.

GE to Donate Metal and Plastic 3D Printers to Over 400 Schools AM Industry

More than 400 schools will receive 3D printers as a part of the GE Additive Education Program, reaching more than 180,000 students around the globe. Committed to developing pipelines of future talent in additive manufacturing around the world, GE will send a desktop polymer printer package to about 400 primary and secondary schools and a metal printing machine to eight colleges or universities.
