New Method for Designing Telescoping Structures Looks to 3D Printing AM Software

Ever since additive manufacturing began to be seen as a production-capable technology, the benefits from generative and parametric design in creating geometries that can fully exploit the possibilities offered by additive processes became even more apparent. A new computational method for creating complex telescoping structures takes geometries to a new level, once that has actually often been seen in science fiction movies.

Each year the editors of the MIT Technology Review identify 50 companies creating new opportunities by combining important technologies and business savvy. Some in the MIT 50 Smartest Companies 2017 list are large enterprises that seem to be growing ever larger, like Amazon and Apple. Others, like IBM, or General Electric are old-guard giants betting on technology renewal. And the list is full of ambitious startups like SpaceX, which is changing the economics of space travel with reusable rockets; Face ++, a pioneer in face recognition technology; and it also includes two pure player additive-manufacturing firms: Carbon and Desktop Metal.

NeoMetrix Technologies Picks Up Distribution of 3D Systems’ 3D Printers AM Industry

Lake Mary, Florida based NeoMetrix Technologies, resellers of rapid product development equipment and software, announced the finalization of a distribution deal with 3D Systems. Headquartered in Rock Hill, South Carolina, 3D Systems engineers, manufactures and sells 3D printers. 3D Systems’ former President and current CTO, Chuck Hull is credited with inventing stereolithography (SLA) technology – essentially making the company the originator of 3D printing. With this 3D Systems relationship, NeoMetrix Technologies completes their portfolio of additive manufacturing solutions that includes 3D Systems’ Geomagic software, as well as Creaform and EvixScan 3D scanning products.

3D Printing Icon Janne Kyttanen Joins Firm Developing Grib AR 3D Modeling App AM Software

The benefits from AR and VR for 3D modeling (and, eventually, 3D printing) are becoming clearer as these systems, which initially were erroneously meant for video gaming, are evolgin to the point that they can now be used almost seamlessly for professional applications. It happened before with Kinect, the breakthrough $100 3D scanner, and with Google Glasses. Now it is happening again as a 3D printing icon like designer Janne Kyttanen has joined Grib, the firm developing the AR 3D modeling app by the same name.

GE AVIO AERO Brindisi Will Produce 3D Printed Components for ATP Jet Engine Aerospace

Avio Aero, a GE Aviation business that designs, builds and maintains aviation engines, will produce, at its Brindisi plant, the additive-manufactured components of the General Electric ATP (Advanced Turboprop) engine, for the General Aviation market. The additive manufacturing machines will be installed at the Brindisi facility from 2018 and the first production activities will start between the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019.
