UnionTech, Inc has opened a new stereolithography (SL) demonstration Center in the Chicago area. The center provides 3D printer evaluators with year-round hands-on access to equipment and application know-how.
Typical in 3D printing, where innovation is all too often ahead of its time (ask Janne Kyttanen), great ideas often emerge before a large enough audience exists that can fully appreciate them. One such product is the Free Universal Construction Kit, a project by Golan Levin and Shawn Sims (released through the Free Art and Technology (F.A.T.) Lab and Synaptic Lab collectives) that lets users 3D print over 80 adapters to connect together different construction sets. It was originally released in 2012 but it is as relevant as ever today.

Now, nearly two centuries later—and well into advanced cinema and animation—the spinning animation device doesn’t quite hold the same wonder that it used to, but there is still a distinct element of magic and amusement about it. We’re not exactly talking about a Terminator-like bionic eye, but it does skew into the realm of science fiction, as the bionic eye could one day enable people with visual impairments to see better.
Ali Khademhosseini, a bioengineering professor at UCLA specializing in tissue engineering and bioprinting, and his team have developed a new and innovative technique for bioprinting tubular structures that mimic complex vessel networks and ducts. The breakthrough research, recently published in the journal Advanced Materials, could enable the bioprinting of tissues for implanting or drug testing.
Renowned French car manufacturer Bugatti recently unveiled its newest super sports car model, the Divo, much to the excitement of the automotive world. Carpenter Technology Corporation‘s additive manufacturing (AM) production facility in Camarillo, CA (CalRAM LLC) has recently achieved AS9100 Rev D Certification for its Quality Management System. CalRAM is a leader in powder-bed fusion additive technologies used to manufacture parts for the aerospace, defense, power generation, and oil and gas industries.
3D printing specialist FATHOM is partnering with GoEngineer to establish what it calls the “largest privately held digital manufacturing ecosystem.” Together, the companies aim to transform how products are designed, prototyped and produced using additive manufacturing software, hardware and solutions.
German design firm Studio 7.5 recently teamed up with French concrete 3D printing company XTreeE to construct a series of 3D printed benches. The benches, notable for their woven textures, demonstrate how additive manufacturing can be employed to produce architectural concrete structures.
