Standards organization ASTM International has announced a partnership with three UK-based organizations—the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), Innovate UK and the British Standards Institution (BSI). Through the collaboration, the partners will aim to fast track the establishment of technical standards to drive the additive manufacturing industry.
With CES 2019 kicking off today, we’re expecting a ton of news and product launches in the consumer electronics sector, some of which will inevitably overlap with the additive manufacturing industry. In fact, we’ve already gotten wind of a few 3D printing-related launches taking place at the Las Vegas event.
LimaCorporate, an Italian multinational specialized in orthopaedics, is partnering with the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), one of the top orthopaedic hospitals in the U.S., to establish the first additive manufacturing facility for custom implants in a hospital environment. By founding the AM facility, the partners hope to improve the availability and accessibility of personalized orthopaedic care within the U.S.
Formlabs is the latest company to make a CES 2019 announcement. The company has introduced two new 3D printing products: Elastic Resin, said to be the company’s softest resin yet, and Digital Dentures, a cost-effective solution for the production of dentures.

California-based metal AM company Velo3D has announced a partnership with Praxair Surface Technologies, Inc. (PST), a producer of premium specialty alloy-based powders for the aerospace and other industrial markets. Through the agreement, Velo3D will establish process parameters for new alloys with Praxair’s TruForm powders and will qualify the company as a supplier of metal powder for its AM solutions.
3D printed insole manufacturer Wiivv has announced an exciting partnership with popular foot care brand Dr. Scholl’s at CES 2019. Through the collaboration, Dr. Scholl’s is breaking into the 3D printed insole market by offering its clients custom insoles powered by Wiivv Fit Technology. Customers simply have to download a smartphone app to order their own customized, Dr. Scholl’s 3D printed insoles.
The contestants of Spain’s MasterChef Junior televised competition took their plating skills to the next level in the recently aired semifinal, all thanks to 3D printing. The kids, who looked on with awe as the presenters introduced the food 3D printing technology, were tasked with creating their own edible decorations.
SLA 3D printer manufacturer Nexa3D will be presenting its newest 3D printer in North America for the first time at CES 2019 this week. The machine, the NXE400, is reportedly capable of print speeds six times faster than competing printers and has a build volume 2.5 times larger than comparable machines on the market.
