PyroGenesis Canada Inc., a company specializing in the production of plasma atomized metal powder, plasma waste-to-energy systems and plasma torch products, has announced the establishment of a new spin-off focused on additive manufacturing powders. The spin-off, dubbed PyroGenesis Additive, was recently approved by the Montreal-based company’s Board of Directors.
The joint project IDAM, which was recently kicked off in Munich, is intended to pave the way for additive manufacturing to enter automotive series production. Specifically, the project partners – consisting of SMEs, large companies and research institutions – will transfer metallic 3D printing into an industrialized and highly automated series process in the automotive industry.
Spanish sustainable infrastructure company Acciona recently teamed up with Spain’s National Archaeological Museum (MAN) to 3D print a full-scale replica of the San Pedro de las Dueñas Arch, built as part of the eponymous monastery in the 12th century. The 3D printed arch, placed in the museum garden, is said to be the first piece of architectural cultural heritage to be replicated using concrete 3D printing.
German chemicals company Henkel Corporation is expanding its novel Recycling Program for its additive manufacturing customers. The program, established in collaboration with TerraCycle, will enable Henkel clients to easily recycle 3D printing materials and adhesives from its Loctite brands, pushing sustainable 3D printing further ahead.
Magura, a large manufacturer of bicycle parts and components, has been working with DH World Champion Loic Bruni to develop perfect lever ergonomics. The conclusion they came to is that ergonomics is a completely individual matter. Now with the product program #customizeyourbrake, Magura offers end customers the possibility to adapt their lever ergonomics to their own preference with an aluminum 3D printed bike brake lever.
Electric Superbike Twente, a Dutch developer of electric motorcycles, recently teamed up with local AM company K3D to develop one of the first metal 3D printed components for the racing industry. The part in question is an electric motor cooling shell for the company’s second generation Superbike.
Orbital Micro Systems (OMS), a Colorado-based space tech company specializing in advanced instrumentation for small satellite missions and earth data intelligence platforms, launched its first Global Environmental Monitoring System (GEMS) constellation satellite yesterday. The satellite, dubbed the IOD-1 GEMS, was launched from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia aboard the International Space Station resupply mission NG011.
Yesterday, Northrup Grumman’s Cygnus spacecraft was launched from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, carrying supplies and scientific experiments to the International Space Station. Among the technologies aboard the spacecraft is Seeker, a new robotic free flier inspector. Seeker was produced through a collaboration between NASA and The Technology House (TTH), which leveraged Carbon’s 3D printing platform for the production of four high-performance thrusters for the Seeker’s cold-gas propulsion system.
NASA technicians and engineers have qualified 3D printing technologies to help in the creation of tailored thermal protection systems for the Space Launch System. The new deep space rocket must be able to endure extreme conditions and temperatures when it launches NASA’s Orion spacecraft and cargo into lunar orbit—3D printed molds could help achieve this needed resistance.
3D printing service Shapeways announced its latest initiative, an e-commerce integration partnership with Etsy. The collaboration will benefit users on both ends: Etsy shops will be able to manage 3D printed orders directly through Shapeways, while Shapeways users will now be able to easily establish their own Etsy shops and import their Shapeways products to the e-commerce platform.
