Based on Nanoscribe’s micro and nano 3D printing technology, scientists developed a 3D microscaffold cochlear implant for steroid elution. For the first time, scientists combined a highly precise, porous 3D printed steroid reservoir with a 2D MEMS-based electrode array to fabricate a novel cochlear implant. This implant is designed to reduce the damage of residual hearing against electrode insertion trauma.
In 2018, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore, 3D printing company HP Inc. and the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) joined forces to advance AM by announcing a new dedicated facility. Today, the partners are celebrating the official opening of the HP-NTU Digital Manufacturing Corporate Lab by showcasing digital manufacturing technologies that they say will improve the efficiency, cost and sustainability of manufacturing and supply chain operations.

JAMADE Germany, a company focusing on the development and production of electrically powered sports equipment, developed and serially produced the AMAZEA underwater scooter using large format extrusion 3D printing technology. This marks a significant new era for digital mass production, as the AMAZEA will feature an impressive 75% 3D printed parts that actually make the device impossible (or very difficult) to produce by any other manufacturing method.
Before it can conduct manned missions to the ISS, the Moon, Mars and Beyond, SpaceX has to prove that its Crew Dragon capsule has what it takes to keep astronauts safe during the flight. One last key hurdle in this endeavor is to test the Crew Dragon’s built-in escape system. The launch escape test – which relies on the capsule’s 8 3D printed SuperDraco engines – was [update] scheduled for Sunday, January 19th. You can watch it again below.

A team from the University of Lincoln in the UK are developing the first toddler-sized myoelectric prosthetic. The medical device, called SIMPA (Soft-Grasp Infant Myoelectric Prosthetic Arm), is made using 3D printing, which allows for dramatic cost reductions.
BAE Systems, a UK-based defense, security and aerospace company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with British AM company Renishaw. Through the agreement, the companies will work to develop additive manufacturing solutions for the defense and aerospace sectors with the aim of reducing costs and increasing production times and quality for future combat aircraft.
LimaCorporate, an Italy-based multinational specializing in orthopedics, has today announced the launch of a new Research & Innovation Center (R&I Center) and an Advanced Laboratory for Testing and Analysis (ATLAs). The new facilities, based at LimaCorporate’s headquarters in Udine, Italy, will be dedicated entirely to 3D printing and advanced testing applications.
