After the recent project from VAUDE, Osprey, a leader in top-quality, high-performance packs presented Osprey UNLTD, an industry-changing pack series that harnesses rapidly emerging technology and materials such as Carbon DLS, previously untapped by the backpack industry. Markforged Holding Corporation reported that its revenues increased 27%, to $91.2 million, in FY 2021, from $71.9 million in 2020. Gross profit grew 26%, to $52.9 million, in 2021 from $41.9 million in 2020 and gross margin was 58% in 2021, consistent with 2020. However net loss from operations also grew during the Markforged FY 2021, to $61.0 million (compared to a net loss from operations of $17.7 million in the year prior). Quarterly (Q4) revenues also grew. The result is even more significant as the company generated almost as much revenue as its competitor Dekstop Metal did after acquiring two large AM companies (and several smaller ones).

Researchers from the Buchmann Institute for Molecular Life Sciences at Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, have used the microArch S140, a microscale 3D printer from Boston Micro Fabrication (BMF), to help fabricate miniaturized vessels called hydrowells for culturing 3D cellular spheroids under microgravity conditions. The effort was part of the Spheroid Aggregation and Viability in Space, or SHAPE, experiment, which is supported by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and will be performed aboard the International Space Station (ISS), where scientific research is performed in low-earth orbit.

When the larger public imagines bioprinting they tend to imagine a machine that builds cellular tissues adding one cell after the other. Generally, that’s not the case, as most technologies leverage bioinks and hydrogels to create scaffolds and deposit the cellular materials. Using Additive Manufacturing technology, the Formula Student Racing Team E-Stall of the University of Applied Sciences Esslingen, Germany, improved cooling of the electric drivetrain and power electronics. Printed with the highest accuracy on the EP-M260 by Eplus3D, the aluminum-made parts were able to easily dissipate the generated heat and therefore improve the performance of the racecar.
Velo3D, Inc. (NYSE: VLD), a leading additive manufacturing technology company for mission-critical metal parts, closed FY 2021, the first full year since going public, with revenues for $27 million, growing 45%, and exceeding expectations. Among other highlights the company shipped the first Sapphire XC system to an aerospace customer in Q421 and achieved the 2021 shipments goal of 23 systems (77% year over year unit growth). Velo3D FY 2021 also saw 34 systems booked in 2021 (versus a goal of 24) and a significant backlog for 2022 – 23 Sapphire systems (of which 18 Sapphire XC)
Swedish bioprinting company Fluicell launched its second single-cell 3D bioprinter: the new Biopixlar AER is a compact 3D bioprinter that lets users create detailed biological tissues with high precision. It is the world’s first microfluidic high-precision bioprinter that fits inside a standard flow hood or biosafety cabinet. Fluicell designed it for high automation and easy workflow integration, with the goal of bringing Biopixlar technology to new customer segments.
