Safran, an international high-tech company operating in the aviation, defense and space markets, has acquired SLM Solutions‘ NXG XII 600 metal 3D printer. The 12-laser production system will be used to produce large, qualified aluminum parts for current and next-generation programs.
It will be added to Safran Additive Manufacturing Campus in Le Haillan near Bordeaux, where SLM 500 machines are already in use. With the last generation NXG XII 600, Safran acquires one of the most productive systems on the market, powered by twelve 1kW lasers.
“Safran is engaged in reaching carbon neutrality for aviation by 2050. Additive manufacturing is one of the main assets to secure this ambitious but realistic target, enabling to develop innovative architecture on our products, as long as reducing significantly their weight. Equipment such as the NXG XII 600 will be part of this challenging journey” declared Francois-Xavier FOUBERT, General Manager of Safran Additive Manufacturing Campus.

Safran’s Additive Manufacturing Campus
Inaugurated in 2022, the Safran Additive Manufacturing Campus is the Group’s new center of excellence in this advanced technology, located in Le Haillan, near Bordeaux in southwest France. The 12,500 square meter facility groups all processes needed to make parts using additive manufacturing, from research and development to engineering and production. More than 100 world-class scientists, engineers and technicians work in the facility to produce parts for the whole group using state-of-the-art installations, especially 3D printers that use 3D digital models to turn metallic powders into aircraft and engine parts.
“With its unparalleled features in the industry, the NXG XII 600 provides new horizons for Safran. The capability to produce bigger parts with stringent quality, cost, and throughput requirements triggers new part designs, and new business cases that were previously impossible to manufacture. SLM Solutions is proud to contribute to this new era of manufacturing,” commented Sam O’Leary, CEO of SLM Solutions.
Presented in 2020, the NXG XII 600 is SLM Solutions’ next-generation system for metal additive manufacturing. The new machine is packed with features to support 12-laser manufacturing and large-part production, marking a significant milestone for the manufacturing industry, as it looks to revolutionize the industrialization of metal additive manufacturing using SLM technology.
