Thor3D and Polyga enter 3D scanning and software distribution agreement

Competitors in 3D scanning Polyga and Thor3D have entered into a distribution agreement. In a mutually beneficial deal, the companies will now be reselling select products from each others’ portfolio. The products in question are the Thor3D Calibry 3D scanner, and Polyga’s XTract3D software.

“The Calibry handheld 3D scanner is a natural fit with the XTract3D reverse engineering plug-in for SOLIDWORKS,” comments Thomas Tong, President of Polyga.

“This bundle provides a complete end-to-end solution for Scan to CAD at a very affordable price.”

Thor3D and Polyga

Headquartered in Moscow, Russia, Thor3D is the provider of proprietary 3D scanners and scanning software. This range includes the Calibry 3D scanner, named after a hummingbird for its size and speed, launched February 2019. The Calibry’s predecessor is the Drake 3D scanner, launched in 2016.

Polyga is located in Canada, close to Vancouver, and is the provider of HDI 3D scanners that use a tripod setup.

With its XTract3D software plugin for Dassault Systèmes SOLIDWORS modeling and design software, Polyga aims to facilitate the use of scan data within legacy CAD/CAM systems. Key features of the plugin include simple sketching tools (e.g. fitting and snapping), as well as the ability to handle large amounts of point cloud data – which is typically a challenge for CAD systems.

A complete solution for reverse engineering

Distributors of the Thor3D product line include Physimetrics in the U.S.,
Canadian Additive Manufacturing Solutions and AN-Cadsolutions, Finland. Polyga’s current distributor network, on the other hand, spans 16 different locations across Asia, Europe and North America.

In the new agreement, both companies will benefit from the extended sales reach of their partner. Customers of both companies will be able to buy Calibry and XTract3D as a complete package, at a discount to the retail price of each product when bought separately. For reference, the Xtract3D plugin typically retails for $999, and the Calibry is priced at around $5,790.

Overall, Tong states, “With this partnership, our intention is to further drive the use of 3D scanning, even for small to medium sized organizations, to design better products for manufacturing.”
