Reddit user Brandon Withrow designed and 3D printed a miniature replica of the highly recognizable purple Simpsons TV set. The best part is that the TV actually works and runs 11 seasons of the much-loved cartoon TV series stored on a 32 GB card.
Inside the 3D printed Simspons TV set is a Raspberry Pi Zero connected to a 640×480 tft display. Withrow, who goes by the name buba447 on Reddit, revealed that the Pi is running Jessie Lite and that the episodes were all compressed specifically for the screen and loaded onto the SD card. When the Pi is powered up, through the USB port on the back of the TV, it starts playing episodes at random.
When one episode ends the next is randomly selected out of the first (masterpiece) 11 seasons of the Simpsons. The knobs also work. The top button is wired up to GPIO and turns the screen on and off while also muting the volume. The bottom button is a POT that is connected to the speaker inside.
Manufacturing on Demand
The Simpsons TV set and parts were designed on Fusion 360 and printed on an Ender 3 Pro.
I don’t know about you, but this writer, who practically grew up with the Simpsons, wants one of these so bad. Withrow said he will be releasing a how-to guide for those who want to create one of these. As another Reddit user said, this is exactly why (desktop) 3D printing and Rasberry Pi’s were invented.
