Exotic Filaments Land in LulzBot 3D Printing Ecosystem

Aleph Objects has been steadily expanding from selling their own LulzBot brand 3D printers to selling 3D printing peripherals, as well. In addition to the open source OpenBCI partnership, which saw the company become an official partnership of the startup’s 3D printed EEG headsets, Aleph Objects sells bq’s open source, 3D printable desktop scanner and filaments from a number of manufacturers. Today, the company announced that it would be adding even more 3D printing materials to its feedstock lineup through a major deal with filament leader colorFabb.

The joint partnership will see AlephObjects officially supporting and selling four of colorFabb’s premium materials: bambooFill, bronzeFill, copperFill, and woodFill. Not only will these be supported by Cura LulzBot Edition v18 3D printing software, but they will also be sold at LulzBot.com. Additionally, colorFabb’s XT co-polyester, made with Eastman Chemical’s Amphora material, is will be added to the list of filaments supported by Cura LulzBot.

Those familiar with colorFabb’s unique composites know just how fun and useful the materials can be, made from a combination of PLA and other materials. While woodFill is made with 30% wood fibers, bambooFill is composed of 20% bamboo fibers, and bronzeFill and copperFill use a combination of bronze and copper powders, respectively. Whether you’re going for a natural-looking, light-weight wood-like object or a heavier metal-like object, capable of being polished or oxidized, all of the materials are well-suited for LulzBot machines, which have been constructed to reliably 3D print with such exotic filaments.

Harris Kenny, Vice President of Marketing at Aleph Objects, Inc., said of the deal, “Aleph Objects’ commitment to Libre Innovation and respecting user freedom creates an environment where developers thrive and the user benefits. colorFabb is a pioneer in the rapidly growing desktop 3D printing industry, and we are proud to officially support and sell their premium materials for the LulzBot platform.”

Ruud Rouleaux, CEO of colorFabb, added, “We are excited to start co-operating with Aleph Objects. The mutual goal of both companies to bring a reliable and satisfactory user experience makes the combination of both Aleph’s well-known and renowned brand of 3D printers and colorFabb’s range of special filaments a perfect match. During our talks we found that there is a lot of common ground between Aleph Objects and colorFabb in terms of dedication to quality and enthusiasm for 3D printing.”

Though this partnership may just be another notch in Aleph Objects’ 3D printing belt, I doubt that it will be the last. Given their love of open source hardware and 3D printing technology, I’m excited to see what comes next.
