3D Modeling Hits Raspberry Pi with 3D Slash & Pi-Top

3D Modeling Hits Raspberry Pi with 3D Slash & Pi-Top

In a new effort to expand access to their easy-to-use 3D modeling tools, 3D Slash has released a version of its app for the Raspberry Pi. 3D Slash is meant to be incorporated into the Pi-Top B+ (Raspberry Pi-compatible laptop), producing a collaborative system that allows both children and adults how to design and code electronic-based objects ranging from robots to PCBs. This is far from the Raspberry Pi’s first go-around with 3D printing, their open-ended and versatile platform has even been used to power 3D printing kits on their own. This is, however, the first time that such a powerful, yet simple, 3D modeling app has made it to the low-cost computing platform.

“Raspberry Pi focuses on broad access to IT for all, from hardware to software. At Pi-Top we encourage our community to build their own robots, PCBs and IoT,” states Pi-Top. “3D Slash completes the picture with a fun and fast-learning 3D app to turn the creations of users into reality.”

The 3D Slash app isn’t just a simplified 3D modeling tool either, there is a game-like nature to the user interface that will serve to educate kids while they enjoy the colorful and intuitive design process. Working seamlessly with the Pi-Top, 3D Slash is installed within the Raspberry Pi laptop kit and can instantly be utilized to create personalized 3D models in the app that Raspberry Pi claims is ‘praised as the easiest on the market’. Although the easy-to-use interface is geared towards easing children and students into the 3D modeling world, the Pi-Top team feels as though 3D Slash can be enjoyed and utilized by all.

“We are enthusiastic about releasing a new version of 3D Slash for the Raspberry Pi world,” says Raspberry Pi CEO Sylvain Huet. “We share the same values regarding friendly IT education, which includes beginners, and the desire to put the power of creation into the hands of the people – and it’s really inspiring to partner up with Pi-Top on this wonderful project.” The Raspberry Pi is certainly making big strides with the incorporation of the 3D Slash app on the platform, as they work to introduce both children and adults alike to the potential applications of 3D modeling and printing in our world today, and in the future as well.
