A videographer, Josh, has been making skateboarding videos for years with a hand-held video camera, so we decided to design and <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/formlabs.com\/3d-printers\/\" target=\"_self\">3D print<\/a> a mount that would attach a GoPro to the bottom of his skateboard. We call it the Deck Cam.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-98539 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/gopro.jpg__664x0_q85_subsampling-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"664\" height=\"378\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Check out the results in the video, skating courtesy of our friend Eric Abo. It was a blast to shoot, and we\u2019re happy to open-source the mount for you to print and try out.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Deck Cam: 3D Printed GoPro Mount\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0QlSDdjQJm4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Design for Shock and Abuse<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We knew this mount would take a beating &#8211; so we printed the part with our Tough Resin, which <i>deforms<\/i> before it breaks. Under heavy vibration and hard landings, Tough handles stress better &#8211; and gives us the added flexibility that we need to open up the mount to accept a GoPro Hero 3 and Hero 4.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-98546 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/facfox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/3d-printed-deck-cam-tough-mount.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1875\" \/><\/div>\n<p><i><\/i>That\u2019s not to say things were perfect on the first try. After printing a prototype that fit the Hero, we took it out to the streets where it promptly snapped. But the great thing about putting your parts to the test is that you can see how they perform under real-world conditions and diagnose the problem. Check out the steps below.<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel radius\">\n<h2 id=\"What%20you%E2%80%99ll%20need%3A\">What you\u2019ll need:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Tough Mount File<\/li>\n<li>Skateboard<\/li>\n<li>Skate tool<\/li>\n<li>Phillips head screwdriver<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/niceeshop-Plastic-Thumbscrew-Thumb-Camera\/dp\/B00OXQEDQE\/ref=sr_1_16\" target=\"_blank\">GoPro mounting nut<\/a>, or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Thumbscrew-Thumb-Screw-Camera-Accessories\/dp\/B00ZZ5CG8Y\/ref=sr_1_7\" target=\"_blank\">fancier version here<\/a><\/li>\n<li>2.5mm allen wrench<\/li>\n<li>2x <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mcmaster.com\/#catalog\/121\/3082\/=zuqzhk\" target=\"_blank\">3mm socket head screw, 25mm length<\/a><\/li>\n<li>2x <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mcmaster.com\/#94150a325\/=zur221\" target=\"_blank\">3mm hex nuts<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.ccs.com\/khiro-1-4-shock-pad-large-skateboard-risers\" target=\"_blank\">\u00bc\u2019\u2019 riser pad<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Print the part.<\/strong><br \/>\nStart out by downloading and printing the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/archive-media.formlabs.com\/upload\/Deck_Cam_Skateboard_Rig_Formlabs.form\" target=\"_self\">free mount<\/a>. You can try FacFox<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add the GoPro.<\/strong><br \/>\nTear off the support material and insert the GoPro into the mount. We tested fit with both the Hero 3 and the Hero 4 &#8211; your mileage may vary with other models. Tighten down the hardware using the phillips head screw. Add the riser pad to the other truck to balance the board.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connect the Camera to the Mount.<\/strong><br \/>\nAttach the GoPro mount to the camera case using the GoPro mounting nut. You\u2019ll want to tighten it down with the phillips head screwdriver to keep the mount stiff.
