To inaugurate this series we are starting with Marina Hatsopoulos, a successful entrepreneur, director and angel investor.<\/p>\n<p>Marina was the Founding CEO and primary investor in the 3D printing &#8220;Z Corporation&#8221; from 1994 through its successful sale in 2005. Ex-Director of the GSI Group, Contex Holding, Investor and Director of Tea Forte&#8230; Marina is a very successful entrepreneur.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Hatsopoulos was honored with Mass. High Tech\u2019s 2001 All-Star Award for Hardware. She has been profiled in Fortune, Forbes, Fast Company, Boston Business Journal, the Boston Globe and Technology Review. She speaks at technology conferences and at the nation\u2019s top business schools, and was on Boston Magazine\u2019s 2008 Extended Power List of the most powerful people in town. She has published articles in Design News and Time Compression Technologies.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77345\" style=\"width: 799px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-77345\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Marina-Hatsopoulos-MIT_0-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Marina Hatsopoulos MIT \" width=\"799\" height=\"462\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marina Hatsopoulos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even as a kid, Marina Hatsopoulos dreamed of running her own business. She studied her passions\u2014math and music\u2014at Brown University and then landed an ideal first job at Chase Manhattan on Wall Street. But soon she felt something was missing. \u201cI felt like I wasn\u2019t creating anything,\u201d she says. To get closer to operations, she went to work in 1990 for her dad, George Hatsopoulos, at his technology company Thermo Electron. Working in mergers and acquisitions, she found that she needed more knowledge herself, so she came to MIT for a master\u2019s in mechanical engineering.<\/p>\n<p>While she worked on that degree, Hatsopoulos and her husband, Walter Bornhorst, bought and rehabbed some decrepit buildings in the Back Bay. Hatsopoulos did the CAD design work and fabricated three-dimensional models. In 1994 when she was researching potential business opportunities in MIT\u2019s Technology Licensing Office, a 3-D printing technology jumped out. The machines could quickly produce inexpensive prototypes for everything from bleach bottles to motorcycle engine blocks. \u201cI understood the value of a physical model for the architectural application, and I could imagine the same to be true for the design market,\u201d she says. She licensed the technology and started Z Corporation with her husband and Jim Bredt.<\/p>\n<p>The company grew rapidly, and they sold it to Contex, a Danish conglomerate in 2005. At the time of sale Z Corporation had revenues of $30 million and a strong history of profitability. \u201cIn retrospect, we were incredibly lucky with the technology,\u201d she says. \u201cIt proved out much better than we had hoped. The whole thing was a fantastic experience.\u201d Z corporation went to be acquired by 3D Systems Corporation in November 2011.<\/p>\n<p>But what makes a good investor? \u201cYou want an investor who\u2019s patient, who has been through the lifecycle of a startup and really understands it. There are always bumps to the road, but a strong investor will remain loyal to the company and will stick with it through those bumps in the road, and will give you more money to get through a tough period. Of course industry expertise, so that they can provide useful contacts, customers contacts, advisers\u201d, says Marina at a past interview.<\/p>\n<p>She is currently Director and an investor at Cynosure, a $250M developer and manufacturer of a broad array of laser- and other light-based aesthetic systems used for hair removal, treatment for vascular and pigmented lesions, and other non-invasive and minimally invasive aesthetic procedures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are starting a new series of articles on the leaders that transform the and 3D Scanning world.
