Carpenter are a manufacturing company that produce &#8220;<em>titanium alloys, powder metals, stainless steels, alloy steels, and tool steels as well as drilling tools<\/em>.&#8221; The deal will involve all of Puris&#8217; assets and business, including their titanium powder production patents. Puris are a company that specializes in creating spherical titanium metal powders to be used for additive manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>According to Carpenter\u2019s President &amp; CEO, Tony Thene,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>This acquisition will provide Carpenter with immediate entry into the rapidly expanding titanium powder market and is consistent with our strategic focus on strengthening our leadership position in important growth areas<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We recently took a look at the production of spherical metal powders at Ames Laboratory in Iowa. Like Puris, the Ames lab also use gas atomization in order to create their spherical metal powders for 3D printing.<\/p>\n<p>There are several different ways of creating metal powders for 3D printing For example, British research is exploring the creation of a new technique called FAST-Forge. The partnership between Safran Landing Systems, the University of Sheffield, the University of Strathclyde\u2019s Advanced Forming Research Center (AFRC) and Metalysis. uses rutile sand and hopes to provide a more cost-effective and efficient method of creating titanium powder for 3D printing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_102600\" style=\"width: 980px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-102600\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Rutile_Sand-P1050705-copy.jpg\" alt=\"The three steps in the Fast-forge process from left to right. The company, already having a strong production base of metal powders, will incorporate the acquisition into their current offerings.
