Photo by Michael Petch.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>The largest survey of the additive manufacturing industry<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now in it\u2019s 22nd year of consecutive publication, the Wohlers Report is produced with information, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collected from 100 service providers, 61 industrial system manufacturers, and 19 producers of third-party materials and low-cost desktop 3D printers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To produce the report, Wohlers Associates worked with a report development team of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">76 individuals and organizations in 31 countries. Ian Campbell, Olaf Diegel, and Joseph Kowen, associate consultants and principal authors, were a vital part of the team who produced the report. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would not have been possible to produce it without them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d said Terry Wohlers.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110207\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-110207\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Wohlers-Report-2017.jpg\" alt=\"The Wohlers Report 2017.\" width=\"768\" height=\"915\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Wohlers-Report-2017.jpg 768w, https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Wohlers-Report-2017-200x238.jpg 200w, https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Wohlers-Report-2017-420x500.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wohlers Report 2017.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Double-digit additive manufacturing growth<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According the Wohlers Report 2017, the Additive Manufacturing industry, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grew by 17.4% in worldwide revenues in 2016, down from 25.9% the year before<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d We asked Wohlers for the underlying reasons for this year-on-year decline in growth<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rate, he told us,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The single biggest contributing factor to declined industry-wide growth was weak performance by the two largest companies in the business. They represented $1.31 billion (21.7%) of the $6.063 billion AM industry in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wohlers Report 2017 records that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">97 manufacturers produced and sold Additive Manufacturing systems in 2016. In 2015 this figure was 62 and only 49 in 2014. With new market entrants, competition in the 3D printing industry is increasing. Photo by Brian Federal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>An ongoing shift in the market<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wohlers also notes that, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This wave of development and commercialization is putting pressure on the established producers of AM systems.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d This is clearly evident in our regular conversations with those across the 3D printing industry, furthermore there has been a perceptible shift in the tone of marketing communications during the first quarter of 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We asked Wohlers whether there were any surprises for him or the team during preparation of this years report. One particular surprise was, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the growing number of American manufacturers of industrial AM systems. As <a href=\"\/service\/3d-printing\"> Industry has noted, several challengers to the primary metal powder for AM supplier are preparing to enter the market in earnest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These providers of metal powder for additive manufacturing include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/news\/arconics-3d-printed-concept-skyscraper-will-eat-pollution-103059\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arconic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/news\/pyrogenesis-announces-successful-powder-production-system-following-first-powder-batch-109684\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pyrogenesis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/3dprintingindustry.com\/news\/metalysis-opens-specialist-materials-discovery-center-3d-printing-metal-109731\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metalysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
